Insulation/Sound Proofing

NPD wants $340 for an AcoustiShield cab kit. Roof, floor, covers everything from the pic. Is it worth it? Any recommendations on a lower cost alternative? My truck is so loud (and cold/hot) in the cab, my wife refuses to right in it. Wait a minute..........maybe that's not such a bad thing

I got the stuff from NPD 39.95 Underlayment with new carpet firewall cover! I have glass packs and I can't hear them like I use to! I have to open the vent glass to get any sound in my truck sense im not use to haveing a noise free truck

The stuff is just like tar paper! I was thinking it woud be the foil but I was wrong but it works good!! So I guess I did not do to bad!

the carpet in my 69 had a tar looking sheet under it, when i ripped it out. i guess that was sound deadener stuff. and inide the 69 was very quite before i started tearing down.

I have used Dynamat and Secondskin extensively. Secondskin is awesome. Last summer I used both the mat and spray versions on my '54 Customline floor and firewall and it was unreal how much noise and heat were cut down. Riding in that car in the summer used to be awful, but now the interior stays pretty cool and it is much quieter as well. It's expensive but worth every penny.

Home made lizard skin...

One part Wicks aircraft supply miscroscopic glass balls
One part Kool Seal white roofing paint
One part warm water

Mix to the consistency of a milkshake or a little thicker and spray on with an undercoating gun. Best part is water cleanup so spray away and wipe off the excess with a wet rag.

I did mine over a 1/8" coat of roofing cement and it's quieter plus heat doesn't transfer like it did. Fifteen minutes of droplight against a skinned section and the other side was cool, fifteen seconds against bare steel and it burned my hand...

So, which is better?...I'm a roofer so i have bunches of Kool-Seal laying around as well as that Fire 'n Ice peel & Stick...I'm getting ready to tear down my interior---I'm not going another summer driving this noisy wind-whistling beast...Can I do both?...

As I see it there are two problems. One is deadening the metal cab so it doesn't sound like a steel drum when you shut the door and the other is heat and sound insulation.

The peel strip rubber peices are good at deadening the boom and the lizard skin stuff works good as insulation.

Mine sounds like one of those Carribean steel drum bands when you shut the door!

And I find that AC/DC on max volume pretty much eliminates the noise factor. Both kick vents open, center vent open, both windows down, vent windows turned in cools the cab down a little. I've got to get a sliding back window!

Yeah I need to do something about sound deadening. My girlfriend hates riding in my truck because it's loud (wind noise, engine noise, etc). I figured I'd put insulation in the roof when I put a head liner in, and I'd put some in the doors.

Another thing is noise absorbtion vs noise reflection. Hard solid surfaces refect sound. Soft surfaces like carpet or cloth absorb sounds.

Another problem area are the natural amplifiers in the truck. Look at the funnel formed from the lower cab corners to the gas tank ports and the same thing from the top down the cab sides. Even the funnel from the cab floors aimed up towards your head. Everything is funnelling noise at you. Compare it to the newer truck where everything is covered with something to absorb noise. Dad's '03 F250 is nearly silent going down the road.

I put roofing cement in thos areas inside and coated the cab corners under the truck. I also tried to seal up the extra gaps etc in the cab floor (except for the factory drains) to help eliminate wind noise. The tar and adhesive pads help absorb vibrations.

I'm not sure what I'm going to do with the door. The '71 drivers door has undercoating sprayed on the outside skin (looks factory). I'd love to put some kind of thin insulation between the door and the door panel...

hey ranchero, this may sound stupid, i dont know, but what if you stuffed something(like the stuff under carpet, super soft absorby stuff) into those funnels beside the gas tank in the cab? would that work?
