Dimmer Switch

Post by 72bumbee »

when my headlights are on bright, the lights all around will flicker on and off then may stay off unless I step on the dimmer again at which point all lights return to normal function.
I replaced the dimmer switch and it still happened!
Where would I begin to track down the problem?
Thanks a bunch!

Sounds like a bad ground in the dimmer switch wiring to me.

 Sounds to me like flyboy doesn't know anything about electrical circuits. The dimmer switch circuits don't have any grounds at all. One wire comes from the headlight switch to the dimmer switch, the other two wires are for the low beams and high beams respectively. It doesn't help people with their problems to offer advice when you really don't know what your talking about.

That's not very nice...

To the OP, I'd suspect something drawing too much current when the high beams are on and the headlamp switch or something upstream not being up to the task.

Any bad/loose connection hot or ground will cause the circuit to pull more amps than it otherwise would, an IR thermometer should show a loose/hot connection the headlight wiring looms on trucks our age are also often not up to the task any longer, the wire or connectors can deteriorate over the years and the thermometer can again tell you whats going on under the insulation.... :2cents:

It's your headlight switch. They have a thermal breaker inside that will trip when to many amps are drawn through it. Have you changed headlights to halogens or added more markers, tail/brake lights to your truck. That is usually the reason of drawing to many amps. There is a person hear on this sight that makes a headlight re-wiring harness that adds relays for the high and low beams. That will drop amp draw on switch. I know from experience.

I will replace the light switch next, as that seems the easiest.
What concerns me is the fact that they will flicker on bright... It seems I tried jiggling the light switch to see if that would make them flicker. I also tapped the dimmer connector to see if that would make it flicker. No luck ..
I'll look around for a new harness in the meantime.
Thanks for the great input!

They usually only blink on high beam because high beams draw more amps, but my old snowplow truck will even blink on low beam after an hour or so.
The relay setup will cure this (but I'm just tryin to get through this winter) (hopefully a "new" old truck next year )
