OEM voltage regulators

Post by jimmy828 »

Been on-line trying to locate OEM voltage regulator and solenoid. I seen where they have them for the early model Mustangs and a few other ford cars but none specific for our trucks. Just wondering if the one offered for a Mustang will work. The parts that i have on truck as of now work fine. They came from Auto Zone. I think i would feel more at ease with a OEM style (Made in USA) part.

All I can tell you is that there must be something different about them. The reason I say this is because I have a 1970 Mercury full-size car that someone had replaced the OEM mechanical VR with a parts store electronic replacement. I found that the mechanical VR in my '69 Ford truck had failed, so, I temporarily borrowed the VR from my car. I put in in my truck, started the engine and checked the charging voltage. I had roughly 14 volts across the battery. It worked fine in my truck. However, I did notice something very odd, IMO. My truck would now continue running even with the battery cables disconnected. It wouldn't run without the battery even when the old mechanical VR still worked. Even more strange was the fact that my Mercury wouldn't run with the battery disconnected with the same regulator that was now in my truck! I also noticed that the OEM mechanical VRs don't look exactly the same either. I can't remember which applies to cars and which applies to trucks, but one has a plastic strip above the terminals and the other one doesn't. All have the pins arranged I-A-S-F though. Maybe someone else has more knowledge on this topic.
