Smoked Voltage Regulator **update**

Post by Southcoast Bump »

I installed a new battery in the '71 today, and got the truck out of winter storage; shortly after connecting the battery cables the voltage regulator started to smoke...I removed the connector at the regulator and all was good at that point. I was able to start and drive the truck normally and didn't notice any issues with drivability, gauges, signals and heater fan all worked. As all seemed to be fine before I put it in storage last October, is there any reason to believe this is more than a tired, old regulator failing due to a fresh battery pushing through it? I plan on replacing the regulator as soon as possible, and have the connector unplugged for now.

Installed a new 'heavy duty' regulator today, no issues at this point after 1/2 hour of driving; the previous v.r. had one severely corroded blade, it's a wonder it didn't fail on me sooner.
