Parking lights

Post by thrice »

Hi guys,

I need to convert the headlights and parking lights on my 1970 F100 for the German technical inspections. I already put in a relay harness for the more powerful H4 headlights. Now I need to convert the parking lights from the turn signals to a small parking light bulb in the headlight housing.
I'm way no expert concerning electrics and reading wiring diagrams is not one of my strength either.
I found a wiring diagram here and was wondering if I could hook up on the 984A / 285 connector on the lighting switch for the parking light bulb. I don't want to cut the harness plus I need to have a running parking light if one of the headlights is shot.

Wiring Diagram

Thank you for your help!

If you just need the parking lights on whenever the headlights are on, you can add a jumper on the back side of the headlight switch -

That way, your parking lights will be on whenever the headlight switch is in the "headlights on" position. They will, of course, also be on when the switch is in the parking lights position. Basically, the jumper ties the parking lights to the tail lights.

Believe me, my young friend, there is nothing - absolutely nothing - half so much worth doing as simply messing about in garages. (Apologies to Kenneth Grahame.)

Thank you for your help! I can't go with the headlights you posted HIO Silver, because I have to use special ones which are allowed by the technical inspectors. Plus the parking lights are not allowed in orange, that's why I need to convert them to the headlights. But 68RGRs link helps, I will put a cable on the connector for the tail lights and route it to my new parking lights. That should work.

Thank you for your help! :fr:

Yes, the jumper wire is directly on the headlight switch. When I did mine, I only needed a couple inches of wire.

You could tie the two wires together at any convenient point. But, if you do it at the switch, you'll be virtually certain to get it right.

The best thing about this method is that you don't need to order anything. A short piece of insulated wire, a few minutes and you're set - Parking lights converted to secondary headlights.

If that will make the inspectors happy, go for it.

I did a similar thing on my '67 GTO back in the day - It had the coolest parking lights but, as it came from the factory, the parking lights went off when the headlights came on. I was obviously well ahead of my time! :D

You need H4 headlights with city lights?
Like these:

See the small bulb inside the headlight housing.
If it's not broke, MOD IT!
