Temp Gauge... Guidance on adjusting IPVR

Post by KRob »

My Truck is a little special :P

I have a 4BT cummins in mine, i have a original ford type sensor for my coolant temp, however the truck never gets into operating temp range according to the guage in the cab.

Cab gauge almost never comes off the peg. I am curious what the start and end of the operating range is temp wise?

These engines 4BT are known for running cool, however i am betting it has a 190 thermostat in it which i would think would register in the operating range on the gauge.

Anyone know. Thought, Idea?

Thanks

Cummins thermostat is 180. I recommend 190-195 aftermarket thermostat.

The gauge will read in the middle somewhere.

Hmm, I am using the original radiator...i think it was a 360 rad.

I think i need to replace the thermostat and see what happens after that. Because it never gets up to the operating range, it may after pulling a hill come off the bottom peg by a hair.

Thanks Average.

krob. since your also having issues with your fuel guage not reading full. you may want to try adjusting your ipvr. it affects all your gauges operating range, not just your gas guage. it may help with getting your temp guage reading where you want it.

ipvr is the Instrument panel voltage regulator. In your post about the gas guage somebody posted a link to the tech articles that would let you identify the sender you had but further down give you information about the ipvr and how to adjust it.

So, i think i have determined the fuel gauge is a bad sending unit.

I have done some reading but i have not found out how to adjust the ipvr, besides that there is a screw you turn. What are the pyramiters (sorry spelling) how do you calibrate it.

Thanks Rob

72 HiBoy,

I have done a little reading....shop manual and on here.

If my understanding is correct the IPVR also effects the oil pressure gauge, temp, and fuel....? My oil pressure gauge, I am not going to say its correct but it seems to reading believably positions, well over center while pulling and a little below when warm and idling.

With this said my Temp and Fuel both seem to be reading on the low side.

When I test the IPRV it the light pulses my guess would be at 2-3 pulses a second....however and i have no scientific proof just from what i thought i saw, i am not sure if it was constant flash. (this may have been influenced by a case of PBR)

Second when i ground my fuel gauge out it registers full.

Thus should i adjust the IPRV as described in http://www.fordification.com/forum/view ... on#p586290 I would hate to adjust the IPVR so that my fuel gauge reads correctly...but then find out in un pleasant cercumstances that my Temp, and Oil readings have been wrong.

Anyway...thoughts?
Thanks
Rob

OK, i adjusted the IPVR this morning...and i think it was mostly successful.

Fuel tank is showing full.
Oil Pressure is reading towards the top of operating.
Temp gauge......well using a known to be working sensor i put it in 190F water grounded it and the temp gauge only came up a little. Not into the operating Range.

I have to go to town and i think i will take Frankin Ford to see what happens while driving.
