Got a 300 I-6.
I've been having a problem with the starter dis-engaging. I usually have to remove the battery cable to stop it.
I replaced the solenoid. Twice!! Replaced the starter since it was dragging anyway. And replaced the ignition switch.
Yesterday it hung again twice. It released both times before I could get out and raise the hood.
I know 1 of the new solenoids was bad. After I hooked it up, it hung again. I pulled it out and tested it and it was definitely shorted. I banged it on the fender and rechecked it and it showed good. Took it back and got another one. It was fine for 3 or 4 days, then wouldn't dis-engage again. Solenoid checked good so I replaced the ignition switch. Was fine for another 2 days and now I'm back where I started, AGAIN.
Anybody have an idea about what's going on here or what to look for ?

Re: Starter Problems
Buy a better solenoid.
Next time that happens try tapping on the solenoid instead of pulling the bat cable.

Re: Starter Problems
Have you changed anything lately? Moved a wire or took one off We know the battery cables are right instead of pulling the cable pull the wire off the little post closest to the battery Red/Blue striped wire and see if it drops out the starter If it does then you have something still sending the 12VDC to the solenoid keeping it engaged. If it doesn't effect it then something is welding the contacts inside the solenoid and we're right back were we started WHY and WHAT is doing it. There should only be one wire on that post unless you have something back feeding that wire but once you pull it that will tell you it's that wire or not. You can also have a test light setup on that wire so when you hit the ignition switch that light will come on and soon as you let go of the switch the light should go off that way you can see it with the hood up and if it stays on or goes off when it stay engaged your farther down the troubleshooting. One last thing check your grounds. Hope this helps.

Re: Starter Problems
cep62, I tried tapping the solenoid once and it didn't stop it. And the new solenoids were different brands from different stores.
DCrusher, that red wire is what I was thinking of checking next. It's the only one on the post. As far as I can remember, I haven't moved or hooked/unhooked any wires lately.
This morning I tried it to see if it would hang. Not once in a dozen tries. I've cleaned the ground to the block. My mechanic said (over the phone) to ground it to the frame and chassis also. Got it to the chassis but not to the frame yet.
I'm going to Arkansas this morning to attend church with my 90 year old sister and brother-in-law. Then the church is having dinner on the grounds. So I probably won't get to do much today.
But Thanks for the help guys. I'll let you know if I figure anything out.

Re: Starter Problems
Just a quick update, it hung again yesterday. But before I could get out and raise the hood, it dis-engaged. After I got home I tried starting it several times, and it worked fine. I checked the ignition wire even though it was working right. No fire til the key is turned to start.
So every time I go by it now, I see if it will hang up.
