Does anyone know of a different type/make starter that can be used on a 71 360 auto??
It seems like I'm changing the starter every year, got the lifetime warranty from Auto Zone,
but it would be nice to have a newer style-longer lasting starter.....thanks in advance...
My first question is why are you going through a new starter every year?? Are you running headers? If so, then you are going through starters because of the heat from the headers. You can probably solve that problem by getting a starter wrap. I was having the same problem on my Firebird and since I got the starter wrap, I have not had to change the starter since. Here is the one I got, but there are others out there. They all do the same thing but some cost $30 or $40 for some reason... This one is cheap and works: http://www.amazon.com/Thermo-Tec-14150- ... I also had a problem with the rebuilt starters, the bendix drive would blow up every couple of years. Turned out the flexplate had worn and jagged teeth on the ring gear, seemed to wear the bendix drive.
Napa Auto part stores carrys very good starters and never had one problem from them http://www.napaonline.com and www. summitracing.com has awesome starters too
I'm not running headers...AutoZone just has crap, I guess...truck starts right up, but the bendix goes bad and the spring doesn't return it as fast as it should, so it
rides on the flywheel for a lil' bit...
did you ever try an NOS Ford Starter you might pay a little bit more but it will last a long time and i do have some NOS Ford 360/390 Starter parts in stock For-Sale if you need any of them
