Left turn signal works, right stays on...no flash

Post by Heirloom »

I started chasing down wiring issues in my new 68 today. I suspected the signal switch was bad and possibly some wiring from PO's. Oh, it turns out Ron White was wrong.....you CAN fix stupid. I've been doing it all day. I got all the wiring sorted out thanks to the wiring diagrams here. I have only one issue left with the lights. The right turn signals do not flash, they stay on when the signal switch is 'up' in the right hand turn position.

Here is what I know...

The left turn signal blinks slowly, slower that I think it should. Left front and rear lights blink as they should otherwise.
The hazards work perfect. They blink quickly and all lights flash brightly as they should.
Right turn signal does not flash. Front and rear lights come on brightly and stay on as long as the switch is up.
I refurbished the signal switch myself today. Not with a kit, but with good old know how and common sense. It WAS sticking and keeping the right side on, but now I KNOW it functions correctly.
Both brake lights function normally.

With everything else working as it should, I am leaning towards the flasher unit. Maybe slight load differences from side to side is causing it not to flash on the right side?? Anyone care to throw out ideas? I have become VERY familiar with wires 2,3,5,9,10....282....green, yellow/black....white/blue....and so on...I'll be dreaming about them. :zz:

Sounds like the flasher has gone.
I let my flasher unit hang down by the parking brake handle, sometimes it needs little tap or two to get it working again. Or try a new one.

If you apply the brakes and then turn on the right turn signal, does the right rear light flicker once (as the connection is changed by the turn signal switch)?

What happens to the right rear light when the right turn signal is on and then the flasher unit removed? (It should go out)

You probably already know that these trucks use two flasher units, so the turn signals and hazards may not flash at the same rate due to flasher unit differences...

Thank you 72BB and Art for your replies. I did know there are two flashers, good looking out though. A lot of people don't. I changed the signal flasher and all is well. Thanks!

I have a similar problem. My right TS works. The left blinks once and then the light is on steady, no blink.

I had another flasher laying around so it put in and both left and right TS worked good. However... when I turned on the parking and head lights the TS did not flash. Is this due to a ground problem somewhere or is it because there is not enough power going thru the flasher unit to make them flash?

Thanks, abe

Possibly a bad ground... Hmm, the increased resistance decreases the current flow, which is what makes the flasher unit work. Sounds possible on paper

Clean the ground wire connections behind each headlight bucket and report back. That is a better idea
