Re: Truck keeps running with switch off?
I'm saying your ignition switch has failed and it's getting power to the coil via the ignition bypass circuit. Try unhooking either of the small wires from the starter solenoid with the engine running-key off, (as I can't remember which is which either #16 or #262) next time it happens to see if the engine stops for you-it should. Here's the schematic on your truck:

I also reccommend to everyone here to get one of these and keep it rolled up in the glove box as I do. More than once I've needed it on the side of the road:

Re: Truck keeps running with switch off?
What kind of ignition, (points /Pertronix / Duraspark)? And what brand of "new ignition switch" did you put in the truck?

Re: Truck keeps running with switch off?
Kingsport's a little far for me to drive, (maybe someone else closer will see this thread). I'm even more confused now that you say you have Pertronix ignition-and you said above that the truck still runs when you unhook the battery? I thought our Pertronix had to have a 12 volt source to power it?
I wouldn't doubt any Borg Warner part as being at fault-Borg Warner parts have always been good parts for me in the past. Unless is has "made in China" stamped on that switch that came out of the Borg Warner box?
Unless the wiring in your truck has been butchered, I'm at a loss here...
The coil has to have power, (fed from the ignition switch or ignition bypass circuit) to keep the engine running AFAIK.
Your coil has to be getting power from either of these sources, (or another source via a butchered wiring harness) to keep the engine running. Maybe someone else can chime in here that might know more.

Replace your solenoid and life will be good.

Re: Truck keeps running with switch off?
If he has in fact pulled the two wires from the posts of the solenoid like stated above, didn't that rule out the solenoid continuing to send power to the coil? How can the solenoid continue to power the coil if it's been un-hooked, (and he stated the engine continues to run when un-hooked)?bubbatip on Sun Sep 30, 2012 8:00 am
Ok heres an update. The key switch is still not cutting the truck off...although for some reason twice out of probably 30 times it did work and cut off the engine. The truck has a new ignition switch, starter relay, alternator, pertronix ii ignition, and voltage regulator.... I have tried pulling the two small wires on the starter relay as previously mentioned and it has no affect and the truck still runs with those and the battery disconnected. As of right now when I drive it I have to unhook the 4 prong connection under the dash below the steering wheel to kill the truck. Any Ideas?

Re: Truck keeps running with switch off?
My bad. I didn't read that part in the post. Yes sir you are correct. I did have the exact same problem and the culprit was the solenoid.
The only other thing that I can think of has already been suggested. The coil circuit is not being de-energized when the key is turned off. I didn't read anything specific about the ignition switch replacement, like did you also have to splice the wiring connector? If so, perhaps the ignition circuit is being powered at all times. Check power at the coil with the ignition switch off. If there's power, the problem is in the switch or the wiring at the switch.

Re: Truck keeps running with switch off?
OK, I'm just going to throw this out there. I have '42 Ford Panel with a 302 out of '93 Mustang. I lost everything after replacing the ignition switch. I mean nothing was on, no radio, heater, gauges, nothing. My friend that work for Painless came over and pulled the fuse box to look at it and wham! Everything worked. There is a bug somewhere in my fuse box. I left it hooked up with only one long screw to support it and it's worked fine as far as starting, however, having said that, the motor continues to run for a few seconds after I turn off the key. So, I'm going to say it's got something to do with the fuse box. Take it for what it's worth

Re: Truck keeps running with switch off?
Can the voltage regulator keep the truck running after key is in off position? I have kind of the same issue going on. New switch, and solenoid still getting 6.5 volts or so off the coil in off position. Sometimes it cuts off sometimes it doesn't
