Horn

Post by J_Boo »

Just curious, if someone can explain how the horn on the column Works. Pictures would be great! My horn button isn't on right now, and I was curious how it works and I want to know if it works and is hooked up at the column. What would I have to do to test it?

The button/pad makes contact through two wires in the colum a power wire and a ground wire. if both are connected it would simply be getting the two contacts to make contact.

your button would simply push in and touch both connectors cuasing a functioning horn to blow if all connections and the relay by the battery work.

a pad does the same it just is the entire contact system in one item. less often to break than an overworked button.

rjewkes,

Can I test a horn by connecting it directly to the positive battery post? Or does it go through a voltage regulator somewhere to kick down the voltage going to the horns? I had a Honda motorcycle once, and in order to put in a louder horn, I had to put in a relay to provide power. Just wondering if Ford does something similar. I don't have a horn button, either, and just got some used horns yesterday.

you can but i warn you if they work you'll be deaf, what would work best is if you could wire up a momentary switch between the battery and horn. and wear ear pluggs if the horn works you'll still hear it but you won't damage your hearing.
and i'd make sure the factory wire isn't attached to the horn when you test fire it.
