Electronic Ignition

Post by LuvMyScamper »

Hey guys,

We're getting a Petronix Ignitor II and Flamethrower II coil installed in our truck tonight. The instructions say to bypass the ballast resistor. In doing some research, I see that some years the trucks had just a fat pink wire from the ignition switch but other years actually had the ceramic box thingy on the firewall. What would our 71 (with a 390) have?

Can anybody help ASAP? The truck is being worked on right now and there is a red wire with a strip on it that comes off the positive on the coil, no pink wire to be seen at all. How do we find the resistor?

If you cant locate a ballast resistor on the firewall I would think it would be safe to assume that it only uses the resistive wire.

( edit )..... It will probably be necessary to locate the resistor wire at the switch and trace it from there to see where it drops down to a smaller wire. That should be the part of the wiring that gets bypassed with a " normal " wire

Let us know how it works. I for one have assembled the components for a Duraspark conversion but am leery of trying it out of fear of screwing it up.

Well it's in and they got it started, so far so good! There was a pink wire coming from the ignition switch. He removed that one, and ran a new wire from the switch through the firewall to the coil, and just left the old wire there in case we ever needed to put the points back in. The multimeter battery died so he couldn't verify that he was getting a full 12 volts to the coil, but he's pretty sure he got the right wire.

That would be right Cindy.
Charlie, duraspark is easy. Call me if you want some help with it man. I kept my duraspark distributor from my 30 year collection, (it's here somewhere). But I'll stay with my Pertronix now that I've fiddled with them for so long.
