I suppose it would work, if you could find a way to use a red lens. It's a shame not to use a cargo light for the purpose intended as there are not many bumps with them

Or you could just paint the bulb red. Be aware though that on these trucks, your brake lights double as your turn signals. Be careful where you draw power from!

You would need to draw the power from the light side of the switch at the brake pedal.

The inside of the lense could be colored with a translucent coating.

Other options include adapting a 3rd brake light with bed cargo light from a later model truck or a red light on either side of the bed light.

Or buy a stop light that fits in your trailer hitch and runs off your trailer wire plug. I plan to do that as soon as I find one at a swap meet or online. All the ones I have seen are running and stop lights, I want just stop light so it will really standout when you hit the brakes.

I saw one on here a couple years or more ago, somone had posted pictures of thier truck and had done this. I seem to recall it was a blue truck that was just painted at the time and the pictures were taken in a grassy field, but can't seem to find the thread now.
