Mega Squirt on an FE

Post by Dragon »

My dizzy is going to a machine shop to have a top from a 5.0 Mustang TFI style dizzy with an FE bottom so I can computer control my dizzy. Quoted price for machining, welding and truing 325 bucks. For the experiment.

Reason: Split EFI topic from manifold gasket topic.

Dragon, You ever thought of going EDIS? You can do EDIS with a megasquirt for way less than $325 and you can ditch your dizzy completely.

Where How any details Sure would if I could get the trigger signal.
Got the details and most of the parts list. Does anyone make a trigger wheel adapter for the FE?

Thank you it has always been the trigger wheel unavailability that stopped me from using EDIS on other FEs and one toyota.

If you have access to a machine shop that can do what you're looking at with your dizzy I'm sure they can put your balancer in a dividing head and cut some slots in it. If you want to do it yourself with basic tools lay out the balancer and drill and tap holes for small machine screws.

Diesel guys have to deal with this crap all the time for generating tach signals.

I sent an email to a company that supplies custom trigger wheels.

If you are gonna run megasquirt why not just get a duraspark distributor and gut the advance stuff out of it and then feed that signal to the ecu?

If you do that it would be the same as using a GM style efi distributor which the ms can read as well.

Whole heck of a lot less work involved if you ask me.

That might work but how many FEs use EFI, EDIS, Electric water pumps and remote filters :D

EDIS is really simple stuff and far better than a distributor. You just cut the top off your distributor and bolt a plate over the shaft. The only complex part about EDIS is mounting the crank sensor. It's not that hard, seen guys do it all kinds of different ways with one of the easiest being machine screws installed into the balancer circumference.

The EDIS stuff from U-pullit is maybe $20. A megasquirt to control it is $50. The megasquirt can run the engine's injection as well, but it's just as happy to piggyback off something else like EEC-IV.

Thanks I was going to make a #1 trigger point out of my dizzy for tach output if I had to get one that way.

I am getting my FE Fuel rails from Edelbrock and most other new stuff from DIYAutotune.com. Even though I was an electronics tech then a Master electronics engineer I don't feel like building one. I am looking at the complete assembled Megasquirt II and the EEC IV might get left out. It seems the II series can read and control all I need to do, yet let me start at the ignition replacement only.

http://www.diyautotune.com/catalog/mega ... p-165.html

i want to learn this like I learned the EEC-IV and V. The V is more powerful but not as easily programmable.

The dizzy does not get modified until the engine is running and ramping up to 40 BTDC from 10 BTDC.

I don't blame you on buying a MS pre-built. I built one of them and it took me 8 solid hours of soldering. An extra $150 for an assembled, tested one the next time was well worth it to me.
