Ignition switch mystery wires??
I am trying to figure out what a couple wires are on the ignition switch in my 67 F100 I have looked at the wiring diagams on here but cant find the solid purple wire or the white with purple stripe wire.
Any idea what these 2 wires go to?
Thanks
Randy

re: Ignition switch mystery wires??
are these 2 wires attached to the stud on the back of the switch?? if so they may have been at one time to aux items.
You may have to try and trace them out to see what they go to. I dont recall theose colors on my 67

I dont have a stud on the back of the switch just a plug in the back. I just took the switch out and removed the plug so I could wire my new harness in easier. I have attached all the other wires and have these left.
So far I have the following.
black/green= accessory
yellow = battery power
red/green = coil
red/blue = starter solenoid
purple = ??
white/purple = ??
That is all the wiring on the plug that came from the ignition switch. These are not added on wires they are made into the switch. I just cant find out what they are?? hmm.....

re: Ignition switch mystery wires??
Randy I looked here and it shows no purple wire or white with purple stripe .
http://www.fordification.com/images/sch ... gauges.jpg
Any chance the colors are distorted.
I looked at several years and didn't find those color combo's
Check here for a complete(or best I can tell) list of years maybe a diff year model???

re: Ignition switch mystery wires??
I would question whether the Harness is original...
Purple wires usually have 2 uses---- Duraspark and Brake imbalance (Though some Fords used a Purple in Factory tach applications, this doesn't seem applicable here).

eric

I believe that the wires are for the brake imbalance warning light. The brake imbalance grounds at both the ignition switch and at the imbalance switch. Power comes from the ignition goes through the lamp and to either ground. That way the brake imbalance light should come on when starting or when the imbalance switch is off center.

bluef250 I think you may be on to something. The wires are not discolored at all they have no discoloration at all in th 6" pigtail I left after the switch, thats what has me confused I have looked at several different wiring diagrams with no success. I am confused. I guess I could just tape these wires off and move on. hmm. I do have one wire left on my new harness to hook to the ignition and dont know where to put it. I am going to call the wiring harness makers tech line and see what they say. I will post any findings in a bit.
Thanks for the help so far everyone, keep those ideas comin.

re: Ignition switch mystery wires??
carecrafter,
Got a couple of questions for you...
You said that the original switch didn't have a stud on the back did it look like this?

Or did it look like this?

If it looked like the first one then something is a little strange as that is for the 68 and newer trucks... the second one with the stud is for the 67 only.
From what I could find the Violet wire is for the alternator "excite" wire... Does your truck have that AMP gauge?
If so look at these diagrams.
On this one look at the back of the ignition switch at the post and you will see (AA) and (AE)... http://www.fordification.com/images/sch ... tpanel.jpg (AE) is wire #297 Black -Green stripped wire for the ACC power to the fuse box, (AA) is #98 Violet wire and is connected to the same place (the Stud).
Now to under stand the #98 wire I had to go to the master diagram for 1970 truck... Look at the back of the ignition switch and you will see wire #98 http://www.fordification.com/images/sch ... master.jpg it goes to the alternator and also the Amp gauge...
Now for the White/purple... I'm not sure but as "bluef250" stated about the brake warning light wiring, it should be connected to the ignition switch as well... However for a 67 it should have a single wire brake switch like is in this diagram. #511 a Green wire... and it will have 2 wires at the ignition switch http://www.fordification.com/images/sch ... ghts02.jpg But for the 68 and up it will have a 2 wire brake switch and look like the one in this diagram #977 Violet wire... and only one wire at the ignition switch http://www.fordification.com/images/sch ... glight.jpg... This wire to the ignition switch is "grounded" when you turn the switch to start or acc to make the complete circuit for the light to come on, so that you know the light is good and not burned out...
The 67 are an odd ball all to them selves on the wiring and other things in the truck... you might have a late 67 early 68 that things were starting to get changed... For this brake warning light wiring look at your brake warning switch (its on the lower inner left fender in the brake lines) and see what color the wire or wires are on it to see if they match this white/purple wire...

My truck has the top switch, the one with no stud. I have a strange truck, goverment purchased so it has some 68 parts but is tagged as a 67, from what I understand this is normal with government purchased trucks.
I talked with the wiring harness manufacturer and he said the 2 wires dont matter. I will be hooking the battery up in a bit to see if he is right.
I sure do appreciate all the help. I will try and post a picture of the plug I have with the wires.

re: Ignition switch mystery wires??
FYI unless you wired in a new alternator Exciter wire and that Violet (purple) wire is it, your alternator wont charge... If you have the Alt gauge in your truck, I'm pretty sure that is what the Violet wire is for.
Hope it all works out.

Thanks for all your help. I am using a ford 3G alternator on my little diesel engine and installing a complete EZwiring 21 cirucuit chassis harness. I am just trying to use the factory plugs on the back of each switch to make it easier to change switches in the future should I need tO>
According to the tech guys at EZwiring everything should work fine as it is now but I will be the judge of that when I hook the battery up and start testing things. I just want everything to work as it should, like my dome light and the dimming feature on the headligh switch and you know the other little things like the ignition switch starting the engine
I will be testing it out tomorrow and checking over everything like the alternator output all the lights, horn, etc. I will let everyone know how it goes and any troubles I ran into installing this harness.
Thanks again,
Randy
