Factory A/C swap

Post by Doug Comer »

I have my highboy stripped in the garage right now. I bought a 68 f100 that has all the A/c stuff on it, totaly complete. Is it worth it to put the A/C in my highboy? All opinions welcome. Thanks Doug

In my opinion its not worth it. So go ahead box it up and send it my way. It will go good in my highboy. :P :P

Seriously It would be worth it if your are not fixing up the f-100.

Doug,

If it is the dealer add in style and not the factory built style, I would go for it! Most of us (older crowd) like A/C and it adds some value to the truck... ( the older I get the less I can stand the Hot-heat and Cold-cold :o )

However the factory style one takes up a lot of foot/leg room on the passenger side so that is a minus to me...
Probably not much help there  but that is my :2cents:

This is the kind I plan on using.

Doesn't take up any passenger leg room.

mrsnicks that looks good. I like how small it is. I think I'm going to go with the big factory one I have. Thanks for all your help. Doug

Check this out http://www.fordification.com/lit/images ... nly_07.jpg this is the factory unit, the photo doesn't show it real well but that A/C box goes almost to the floor under the clove box. It takes up a lot of the passenger foot room and about 3/4 of the glove box as well... Also, the easy way to tell beside the size is that the factory ones have the controls in the dash with the heater controls and not on the unit itself.

There were lots of variation of dealer add on and aftermarket odd on type units. Here are some of the dealer types.. http://www.fordification.com/lit/images ... ies_03.jpg http://www.fordification.com/lit/images/71acc-bro05.jpg

I have one of those units in the top photo.
Haven't totally decided against using it.

You got the style / type I like. :) The parts would be brand name specific for the main box inside... You may be able to find some universal parts that work in place of others, just have to see. The rest of it in the engine compartment will be pretty much universal / Ford.

True, the parts used on the stock units are basically the same parts as the universal ones. The only real advantage to the stock unit is the in dash controls. Unless, of course, you're going for a full fledged restore. I'm with TF though, the stock units take up too much of the pass side leg room.
A guy gave me an after market one some time ago, it's design is kind of cool in that it conforms to the dash and goes from one end to the other so there's even vents on the extreme ends. Similar to the top one in that first photgraph, but with round vents. But he was glad to get it out of the truck because he couldn't work on anything under the dash. I pulled it out and I saw what he meant, it really capped off the under dash of the truck. Don't know if I'll ever use it, but at least all it really cost me was some time and a couple of bloody knuckles.

Here's the one in my trunk, it's a Ranger II and works well when the compressor keeps freon in it. Although I would have liked one more fan speed. "High" seems more like a "Med" in my other vehicles.
