Im no expert but I just had to repair my wiring harness on my 71 f100. I studied the wiring harness linked here:

http://www.fordification.com/tech/wiring_1972master.htm

Take note of the diagram and the ammeter wiring connections. They both T off the main black wire off the alternator. This is known as a shunt or another "path" for the current to flow from the alternator to the battery. It will work if you hook one wire from the alternator "B" battery wire. And the other off the battery side of the Solenoid.

My factory harness was melted from the PO mistake. But the one "yellow" wire going to the ammeter splits off that wire about a foot up the main black wire that ends up at the starter solenoid. Same post the positive battery cable goes to.

So you need one wire near the alternator and the other one further up the black wire ie near the solenoid. Mine has the yellow near the alternator and the red hooked to the solenoid.

Hopefully this makes sense.
