First of all, how do you know it's not charging? Are you going by the gauge in the truck, if it has one? The AMP
gauge in the dash may not be working, but the charging system could be working fine. The AMP gauges are protected by fuses located under the hood and if one of the fuses is blown the gauge will not work.

First thing I would do would be to measure the voltage at the battery with the engine idling. With all lights and accessories off you should have anywhere between 13 - 14.7 volts at the battery. If not, then re-check all connections and grounds, including battery terminals, to make sure they're tight. Make sure that the voltage regulator is grounded. It's okay to connect your electric choke to the Stator (STA) terminal of the alternator. Doing that wouldn't cause your charging system to not work. Also check your wiring harness for splices, frayed or worn insulation, etc. Here are a couple of wiring diagrams for the charging system, depending on whether your truck has an ALT light or an AMP gauge.

Check that all of these wires are connected to their correct locations. The most likely place where the wires may have been mixed up would be between or at the alternator and regulator. "Orange-Blue" means orange wire with blue stripe, "White-Black" means white wire with black stripe, etc. Good luck. :) I hope this helps.

with the truck at idle, with a voltage meter hooked up, it is a slow drain starts at like 14.2 then slowly drops

I did that once, changed everything and no help. In the end it was truly the last part. My ground wire to the engine from the battery was so greasy and dirty it did not make contact. Removed and cleaned terminal and block to bare metal and it worked. I don't know why it fixed it but it did.
