brake light issue mystery `

Post by sacramento_ford »

i have a 69 ford.. i had to cut the turn signal and remove it from column, now no brake lights, does the brake lights depend on turn signals to be hooked up in order to work, are they on the same circuit.,???

Everything regarding front and rear turn signals and brake lights route through the turn signal switch and column harness. If you have no turn signal switch you will have no brake lights. It doesn't have to work but the circuits must be there.

If you can figure out the wiring diagram and color chart you could probably splice together a patch to bypass the turn signal switch.

I had one of those on my (ahem ) '62 Chevy step side by in the early '80s. IIRC, it wasn't difficult to install. Good luck!

The new switch is not expensive and is relatively easy to replace, I highly recommend this instead. Post a pic of the wiring diagram from you new switch and I will see if I can help.
Having said that, if you jumper the Green, Yellow/Black, and Red/Black wires at the back of the turn signal switch connector, your brake lights and hazard lights should function.
I will say that I think it is a bad idea to run with turn signals not working. In Florida it will get you a ticket. I guess you can revert back to hanging your arm out the window, but that doesn't work too good in the dark...
