I went on a car show weekend trip 200 miles one way last weekend. I was pulling my 64 Galaxie on a trailer with my camper on the bed. About 150 miles into the trip it started to run real bad. I managed to limp it to the fair grounds and it was done.
Have 3 old Fords and have been planning to do this conversion for years. Bought a wiring harness off ebay. I did not have time to search the junk yards and did not want it to be cobbled up. The kit (harness) I bought was plug and play except for 3 wires. I bought a rebuilt distributor a new old stock KEM red grommet module and new ballast resister. Used the factory supplied instructions. Got to the 4 wire plug at the module and wire colors did not match. I grabbed a second module off the shelf (green grommet) and those dont line up either. I also noticed the tach and power wires were installed in the wrong spots in the coil connector. That was an easy fix since they were removable. I took four wires and made jumpers to match the wire colors.After doing this the truck started right up. Happy with the way it started but not happy to have to cobble it together. I have contacted the seller and waiting to see what we are going to do. Yes I couls cut and splice the wires but that defeats the reason I bought the harness.

I'm amazed that the truck ran at all with that distributor. Looks like it has been sprayed with a graphite based grease. Sorry to hear you had to cut into your new wiring harness, hope they make good on it and send you one that plugs in.

I did not tear it down. I figure it is junk. If I get a chance I will take it under the knife. Dont have time now. It is maybe 2 years old and less than 10 k miles on it. The shaft actually dropped 1/4 of an inch. I finally was referred to the Manufacturer of the wire harness. My seller on ebay could not be bothered. Turns out a year ago they had a problem with 10 or so harnesses that were misbuilt. Lucky me. They said they would ship me a new one when I sent the old one back. By doing that it would take my bump out of service and I cant have that. I bought a new one from the manufacturer and when I send the old one I will get new. I want to convert my Galaxie and my sons Mustang so it is not a problem. Kinda pissed the ebay seller would not step up and handle this. Anyway if you get a GOOD harness it is an easy swap. Truck seems to start a little better and idles better.
