Reverse lights and unknown wire
OK, I have two questions:
1. Putting my motor in the other day, hooking up the wires on the alternator and see a wire coming from the harness that has at some point been cut. No clue where it might go. I drove the truck for a year or so and never had a charging/alternator issue, only thing that has never worked has been the horn. I posted a picture on photobucket, not sure if it actually was supposed to go to the alternator or where. I have the ground wire attacched from the alternator to the engine and the 2 lead terminals attached, only one place for a wire left on the alternator and its labeled "STA"
2. Ive never had reverse lights, the switch is long gone, there are two wires hanging where the back up light switch was (original 3 on the tree), I decided the other day to hook up some jumper wires to see if the reverse lights would light up, but when I attached the hot wire the wipers started to work? Wipers have always worked great using the wiper switch........
Any ideas on either?

I couldn't get your photobucket link to work. From your post, it didn't hyperlink the entire link.
Need more info on your reverse lights. In the tech section, you should find a wiring diagram for your truck; hopefully, that leads to a solution.

Re: Reverse lights and unknown wire
could not view your picture(s) either, so no idea with question #1.
Regarding question #2, there is a connector with two wires that has a 90* end on it and two flat 'spade' terminal connections located near the steering column rag joint area. Jumping across the two should make the reverse lights work. If not, check the 4-terminal molded bullet connector (looks almost like a 4-flat trailer connector) jumper that manual transmission trucks have in the same area, but on the inside of the firewall. If i remember right, some of the wires on that jumper are red with a blue tracer.

Re: Reverse lights and unknown wire
I figured out the reverse light wires, had a brain lapse I reckon, hoping I can run the wires to the reverse light switch on the side of the 5 speed and have reverse lights, everything has always worked great other than the horn and reverse lights. Still curious about the wire that's coming from tje alternator harness that i found the other day, hopefully this link will work ...

Re: Reverse lights and unknown wire
Does your alternator match the 4-wire unit shown in this disagram, or has it perhaps been replaced with a 2-wire, or even 1-wire unit? Do you have a voltage regulator on your truck?

Re: Reverse lights and unknown wire
I see the wire in the picture, but cannot tell its color. What color is it and its stripe (if it has one). Wire #4 in the previously posted wiring schematic goes to the "s" terminal on the alternator and the "S" terminal on the voltage regulator. I think the truck may still charge the battery with that wire disconnected.
You said your horn does not work, is there a wire with a female spade connector connected to it? Looks like the horn wire is yellow with a green tracer stripe.
Does that harness look like it was re-taped? The factory harnesses usually were taped with a non-adhesive tape and adhesive tape only at the last end to keep it wrapped. Adhesive electrical tape over the whole length means someone was in there, and if that is the case I would go back in there to see what was done (or un-done?)

Re: Reverse lights and unknown wire
The #4 is the color code for the wire, not the wire number. The attached file contains the color coding system for all our trucks, I believe. In this diagram the 4 is a white wire with black stripe. All the schematics for all our trucks and all the options are contained in the Schematics section in the main menu of the home page. Hope this helps.

Re: Reverse lights and unknown wire
I ran some jumper wires from the posts on the side of the T5 to the wires to the old back up light switch, turned the key on, put it in reverse and they work.....amazing how little things can make one happy. . I have not looked to see if i can determine the color the unknown wire, i hope to have time later. I do appreciate the info....

Re: Reverse lights and unknown wire
I just reread the post......I hooked up a button in order to have a horn, thats where the yellow wire came from

Re: Reverse lights and unknown wire
Looks to me like that number designates the circuit number. For a given circuit, the wiring gauge and color is usually consistent.Mohillbilly wrote:The #4 is the color code for the wire, not the wire number.
