Help on trouble shooting factory a/c

Hello all, hope you are enjoying a little football or at least enjoying a relaxing Sunday! Well, I hope to get a little advice on getting my a/c working. We are having the hottest weather we have had all summer here in the Northwest, so it would be nice to see how it works.

I bought my truck, which had factory a/c but it was disconnected. So, now I am trying to get it going. I have it all hooked up and installed a new belt but when I turned it on the compressor appears to be locked up. Working on the a/c is new to me, just like a lot of stuff I am doing on my truck. I am wondering what is the best way to go about trouble shooting the problems. Thanks for any help.

Well, starting with the compressor issue. Remove the belt, grab ratchet and socket that fits the nut in the center of the compressor pulley and see if you can turn it. It should turn relatively easy, if not then yep the compressor is done for. Evac the freon and change out the compressor. While your at it I would recommend a new reciever/dryer also. It will be ruined when you open the system. Draw a vacuum on the system, recharge with freon and let us know. If you want to know how to check the rest of the system before you do all that. Let me know and we'll work through it.

Thanks for the input. I does not turn so I will look into getting a new compressor and then go from there. Is this a junk yard thing or should you buy a new one?

I'm always lookin' to see what I kind find in the boneyard. Many here will tell you the compressors are a tough find in the yard. That will be one of those decisions only you can make. I've used them out of the yard with no issues but you may feel more confident with a new one. Then again the sticker shock may cause you to rethink a new one . Good luck in your search. Thanks for the input, I looked online and they cost between $180 and $260, so I will look around for a used one. Do you know if they can be rebuilt?
