Thunderfoot wrote:For the Duraspark (DS) you do Not use the Resistor wire so you want to take it out of the circuit, you want to wire the Red wire from the DS to where the pink wire connected at the ignition switch. Or if you have the blue wire on the firewall that was used in some emissions trucks you can hook to it and then wire to the (+) side of the coil like in that diagram (leaving the pink wire still in the truck but not using it). The Duraspark uses full 12V to the coil and doesn't need the resister wire. This also eliminates using the brown wire from the starter solenoid as it was used to boost the coil to 12V at starting with the points system BUT you want/can hook this Brown wire up to the White wire on the DS.

You will also need to replace the coil for one that is designed for the full 12V used in the DS system as the points one is not made to be used this way, points coil is for 6-9V used on it.
So if i hook the brown wire to the white wire off the module, would it connected to the start side of the solenoid like in the diagram or ignition side. Thanks
It would still hook to the (I) ignition side of the solenoid... it is doing the same purpose of sending 12V to the white wire when you are cranking the engine over... It is just another way of running/routing the wires... The newer solenoids (ones used with electronic ignition) don't have the (I) terminal on them as this was just used for points systems and when you crank the motor over it would send full 12V to the coil for start up. If you hook it up to the (S) start side then you would eliminate any issues if that part of the starter solenoid stopped working... but over all it is the same function... I'm just listing this info as info and options...
jp2005 wrote:Ok that sounds good. The wire I add is a 18 gauge or 16 gauge? Just to be clear thank you again fordman
I would use 16 gauge for this, it will be fine.

Jumping on this thread, does anyone know what would be used to convert an inline 6 to duraspark? As far as the ignition module, would it be the blue tab? I had a deal in the making but wasn't sure if I could use the duraspark from a V8 on my I6.

the v8 and 6 cyl dist is different. the wiring harness and box will possibly be the same.

Thanks fordman. I knew I would have to have a dist for a 300 6. I've been trying to look online for something to tell me, with not much luck. Not really any junkyards around me to even go peak at some old trucks to see what I can salvage.

put a screwdriver across the frotn large and frotn small terminals on the starter relay. it should start then. if it does then the red small wire isnt making contact with the ignition switch.

It didn't start when I put the screw driver on the small and large nut of solinoid. I checked spark plug and I'm not getting spark. Will a pertronix coil work? Or will I need a new one, it's 1.5 ohms. I'm thinking I'm not getting a full 12 volts to coil Is it possbile to run brown to red wire on the module side to boost it. I also had to move the white wire to the "I " side of the solinoid and it aleasts cranks from the key but doesn't start.

Ok so I finally figured it out and I have finished the install of the duraspark. I didn't need a new coil I just wasn't getting 12 volts to the coil. Also I had the connector wrong my switch when I rewired it so that gave me problems. But just want to say thanks again guys. The truck rans great!
