Actually NO... where it says to use "with external resistor" that means it is not to be used with full 12V, it is the same as the stock one on your truck to be used with a resistor wire or ballast resistor, it is designed for 6-9 volts.

Is that why it is so hard to start my truck?

It should start ok but it will damage the coil in time running a constant 12V to it... It could be damaged already causing the hard starts... Usually running these resistor type coils with full 12V for extended time will over heat the coil and the truck will die, then after the coil cools it will work again,,, then after more times the coil will just be junk and not work at all... :2cents:

Thanks every one for the help. I ended up just wiring in the Gm HEI module. It was much easier to do. Starts just fine with old coil, but am going to invest in a tfi coil from salvage yard. How much should I expect to pay? Thanks again for the help.

well they seem to be $50 new - so go from there

now what is funny - i looked on amazon ..

http://www.amazon.com/Accel-140012-83-9 ... B0015PUJ2S - description is great - but look at the image for it - boy that would look good on my truck :D - it must be the "no strings attached" price

Fordman is this diagram for any engine. Reason I ask is I'm collecting all the parts I need this week to convert mine over and want to make sure I can use this diagram with a 390. One thing I don't understand is why all of the ford diagrams I find have a resistor if its not needed. Thanks

Thunderfoot wrote:For the Duraspark (DS) you do Not use the Resistor wire so you want to take it out of the circuit, you want to wire the Red wire from the DS to where the pink wire connected at the ignition switch. Or if you have the blue wire on the firewall that was used in some emissions trucks you can hook to it and then wire to the (+) side of the coil like in that diagram (leaving the pink wire still in the truck but not using it). The Duraspark uses full 12V to the coil and doesn't need the resister wire. This also eliminates using the brown wire from the starter solenoid as it was used to boost the coil to 12V at starting with the points system BUT you want/can hook this Brown wire up to the White wire on the DS.

You will also need to replace the coil for one that is designed for the full 12V used in the DS system as the points one is not made to be used this way, points coil is for 6-9V used on it.
So if i hook the brown wire to the white wire off the module, would it connected to the start side of the solenoid like in the diagram or ignition side. Thanks

no the brown wire is a full 12 volts. the white wire goes to the start side only or the red start wire coming off the solenoid. thats what the diagrams shows.

Ok with that being said there's not going to be anything connected to the ignition side?

i need to look at this while typing. plus it gets it on this page.

Image

disconnect the brown wire. i'm sorry. red and white go to the S terminal from the box and switch.

it looks like red from the switch goes to direct battery power.
the resisto wire needs to be cut off 4 inches or so from the ignition plug. or removed from the ignition plug and a new wire ran out to the coil and the box.
green to the coil
orange purple and black go to the dist.

Ok that sounds good. The wire I add is a 18 gauge or 16 gauge? Just to be clear thank you again fordman
