Alternator????

Post by 1976-f100 »

Hey im 19 and not good with truck electronics...i got a 76 f100 with a 390 4speed 4x4.....the stock alternator was seizing up so i went out and bought a new alternator...since my recent purchase the battery has not been receiving a charge from the alternator. i put a new voltage regulator and checked all the fuse able links. the truck will run as long as the battery has a charge then it dies....i dont know what is going wrong!

either the alt is bad. which can happen. even with a new one. or the wiring is hooked up wrong or messed up.

try this. charge the battery completely. once it is charged. remove the negative battery cable from the battery. put a test light or meter between the battery negative post and the cable. if the light or meter come on or move. then you have a draw on the system. make sure all the lights and radios are turned off. if you still have a draw. pull out one fuse at a time until the light goes out. which ever fuse controls the test light or meter to not show a draw. the draw is in the circut that the fuse controls.

It sounds like your battery is really low. It needs to be charged to a full charge with a battery charger, don't expect the alternator to do it. Have you have the battery tested? Maybe it is your problem, not the alternator.

the only catch is that ill end up finding if that is the problem by only one way....gettin all the way across town and then the battery goes dead and i wont be able to get it home(with out using AAA towing is). not the most ideal way to see if i have fixed my problems.
