fuel gauge
My truck has sat for about 15 years,
fired right up but gas gauge only moves to empty mark,
pulled sending unit out and it is not floating, what causes it not to float?
I move it manually and it works awesome just dont float in tank...
Oh yea, there is a small piece of rubber or plastic that is black on the float arm that can be moved up and down the arm, what is it?
any help is appreciated...

thanks Greg

Re: fuel gauge
Usual causes of a non-floating "Floats" are holes in them which causes them to sink like the Bismark. Best solution is replacement.
Don't lose that black boot around the float... it's a anti-clang device. Without it your float will hit the sides of the gas tank while driving and make that clang noise I was referring to.
EDIT: That black plastic piece sounds like the clamp for adjusting the float... sorry for missing that.

Re: fuel gauge
Well it's probably been 15 years or longer since I replaced mine... so my old memory being what it is tells me I replaced the whole unit as opposed to swappin' in used parts.
Having said that, if you're on a budget, check with Fordman cause I'll bet he's got a few. In fact, I'll bet that Ford Motor Company probably calls HIM when their outta parts!
...I digress...

Re: fuel gauge
Again, if memory serves, the aux tank sending unit is the same as the in cab tank sending unit.

Re: fuel gauge
At the expense of gettin' WAY OFF TOPIC, check with some of the vendors Keith has listed on this site.
I don't know if they're still available from Ford or not.

Re: fuel gauge
dennis carpenter.com bought most of fords tooling diagrams and equipment to make parts for our trucks. they are probably going ot be the closest to ford that you will find. but not always. dennis has his products marked on his site if they are imported or not. if you want to know for sure you can call them to ask questions.
