Electric cool ing fan

Post by Fo-Mo-Co »

OK so I have this huge 4 row dual pass Fluidyne nastruck radiator in my 68. No way i can see to put a shroud on it. How many amps can I pull of the stock charging system? I was looking at a 18" electric fan but it pulls 25 amps. I think all I have now is a 60 amp alt. Or of you have any other ideas on how to keep her from heating up at the stop light.

Most stock alternators are around 45 amps... Your going to want to upgrade your alternator to something bigger, either one of the 100amp replacement ones or change over to the 3G alternator like in the sticky at the top of the forum.

the 73-79 trucks that had a 460 in them used 4 core radiators. just get one from one of them or from a vendor who sells the shroud for the 460 radiator. unless that brand name is a crossflow or something different. then i wouldn't know.

I wasn't kidding about the radiator. It's a for real Nastruck radiator. 4 row dual pass used at Daytona, Charlotte and Texas motor speedway. I'll get some pictures of it.

I have a 4 core in my 68 C/S with a 2 sp electric fan.It normally runs on low and goes to high when I run the A/C.I converted to the 3G alt and I have no electrical problems and no over heat problems.

The stock alternator wasn't much over 30 amps. I saw 45 earlier in this thread. Even at 45 amps, that's not going to be enough to keep up with a fan and everything else all at the same time.

I think I measured my truck at 65 amps with the engine off and 50 amps with the engine on. That's with two electric fans and absolutely everything else on. I have a 70 amp alternator.

So even with a humongous radiator like that and a stock fan you'd worry about overheating?

I used a 2 speed fan out of a 94 -96 T-bird with two relays for high an low . After the fan upgrade I had to do a 3G alternator upgrade now everything works great I got lot of pic at www.supermotors.net/21939

No way to fit a fan shroud on the radiator and if I get stopped in slow traffic it starts to heat up. I have had it up to 185. It has a 160 tstat and runs down the road at 160 all day long no matter how hot it is or how hard it's ran. SO I figured I would run a fan that comes on at 180 and shuts off at 170. So it would be off 90% of the time. I can get a 60 amp alt aat NAPA. Is that big enough?

Oh is see. I just asked because my truck doesn't have a shroud.

The shroud is not a big deal. It helps, but will work without it.

Run it a while and see how it works before you decide to change it.

I have electric fans and the motor is a lot quieter now. The stock fan is real noisy, especially at highway speeds. Once your doing about 30 mph there is enough air through the radiator that you don't need a fan anyway.
