Relpaced the entire TSS switch and wiring and managed to get 3 out of 4 TS working. The right rear was not working. The switch was sending out a pulse of current to from the switch through the first plug so I traced it from the light back to the plug shown below which is somewhere between the TSS and where it goes through the firewall. I tried to bypass the plug and now I've got nothing. Any ideas? Its really a tight cluster up in there under the dash. There are several other plugs and not much wire and room to work with.
The last time I checked the wires with my tester the power wire to the TSS is very weak - hardly lights up my tester at all. The horn wire right next door works fine.
I'd really like to replace all the wiring from the new switch all they way out to the rear lights. Does anyone know where I can find just that section of harness or do you have to build it from scratch?
the horn wire is a ground circut in the steering column. so it shouldnt have power to it. whent he horn button is pushed it makes contact with the horn brush which makes contact with the tss completeing the ground circut. a wire that is suppose to be hot and barley gets power running through it would be a bad ground in that system. such as my backup lights only put out so many volts to the lights. but the lights wont light up because there is not enough voltage. i was told it is a ground issuse with my backup lights. yet all my other lights work fine. i have no idea where the back lights go to ground at though.
i have not seen a plug like that on the dirvers side. here is a piece that was cut off of the drivers side when i found it. but the black plug doesnt have the same female and male plugs. the one i have has two male and two female plug coming out of it. tel me more about your truck wiring. does it have factory gauges. is it really a 68? when was your 68 born? early late or mid year?

The section of wiring you have shown is similar to the section where I suspect I'm having issues - same color plugs.
So, you think I have a bad ground somewhere in that circuit. It sure acts weird like a bad ground. Everything except the rt rear TS was working fine until I started messing with the red plug shown. Then things got funny - intermitinat blinking, blinking off and on and then nothing at all - lost all TS function.
I have factory gages and its as 68 F100 Ranger. How do I find the birtdate of the truck?
Is there anywhere you can buy sections of harness - like just the section you have shown? It slike you have to splice one wire at a time or buy a $600.00 kit. There has to be some middle ground.
BTW, the red wire with a black stripe going from the red plug back to the firewall on my harnes is in bad shape - it looks like it's been fried or has been melted. I suspect this may be part of the problem but I didn't have a problem with this wire anywhere where else before
the sectio i have hear was cutt off of the engine side of the headlight/tail light harness going out ontot he inner fender. you can find headlight tail light harnesses for these trucks here and there. they are probably used. the plugs have to match up to work. if your broke off on the main harness you have to replace the main harness or put new wires in or wire the wires together where the plug broke off at.
the vin page tells by seiral number the birthday of the truck.
i may have aheadlight harness complete. for the drivers side. i need to look though. to see if the plug is the same as yours.
from what i found that plug in your picture is off of the main harness. the headlight harness i have here is the oppostie of what you have in the picture. so you may have to get another harness or wire around that broken off plug.

I think I'll explore the local junk yards or learn how to make my own harnesses. Any recommendation on where to find supplies to shrink wrap my own sodered connections? The dice and slice method just isn't working for me. It would be kind of cool to build my own custom harnesses.
Does anyone know of a supplier of wire in the same color schemes as the wire in our trucks? Colored wire with stripes? All I can find is the basic solid colors

I'm not "Brand Loyal" Ford-Chevy-Dodge-Toyota I have them all, one even cross mixed...
If it Looks good and Works good then it's ok by me. Everything has its issues from time to time...
Lost my brake lights too while teasing out wires behind the dash. Traced it back to the plug on the stopligh switch. Made me wonder if I should just replace all plugs. What is the life span of a typical electrical plug? What is the lifespan for wire?
I think I might replace the fuse box - any suggestions? May as well since I need to replace some of the wires running back to it. LMC has a mini fuse pannel with the blade type fuses for $69.95. Seems like a lot for a fuse box!
I purchased all the supplies to make my own harnesses. It cost just about what it would have cost to purchase the section I needed (used) so I feel better knowing I now have everythiung i need to rebuild everything new. Now, its just time and patience:) I never thought turn signals would be such a bear.
Life span is kind of subjective... the connectors will depend on the climate/environment the truck has lived in but they are old technology and pretty much on average all are getting hard and brittle and are fine if not disturbed but can break if they are... The wire is kind of the same but usually will last longer, it all depends on if it has ever been over loaded on current (which the main power wire into the cab is under rated so pretty easy for it to go bad ) and also same deal on environment for the coating on the wire itself... it is easy to tell that as the coating becomes brittle and cracks and brakes when bending it...
Overall most have held up good for 40+ years but it is a good idea to keep an eye out for this and replace it...
