'69 F-100 Horn question

Post by evan_flatt69 »

I recently got a 1969 F-100 and while cleaning out behind the seat I saw the horn! I need help figuring out where the horn goes under the hood and how to wire it. (I assume it is wired) I only see 1 screw coming out of the horn so I'm quite baffled. :hmm:

the single horn will bolt above the voltage regulator on the radiator core support. there should be one yellow wire that hooks to the horn. these trucks could also come with dual horns. if it is a hi side of a dual horn setup. then the hi side bolts to the drivers side of the radiator core support in the same position as the low side of the dual horn setup. the wire for it is also yellow and runs across the top of the core support behind the radiator top tank.

once it is mounted and hooked up and it doesn't work. there are two common problems with the horn systems in these trucks. the first is the missing or broken horn brush. the horn brush is located under the steering wheel in the turn signal switch. it looks like a spring with a wire inside of it and a piece of brass colored lead on one end and a flat brass color disc on the other end of it. the second most common problem is the steering column isn't grounded properly. in 1970 ford used a thin strap of metal across both sides of the rag joint to make this ground possible. i don't know what they did before 1970. it may have been in the wiring or the rag joint made better contact for a ground. you can add a ground at that point with just a piece of wire from one side of the rag joint to the other side.

the yellow wire. around the passenger side where the low horn mounts is the voltage regulator. which also has a yellow wire in its wiring harness. if the wires have been cut let us know and we can help you trace which one is for which device.

you can also test the horn before mounting it. by grounding the horn and running 12 volts of battery power right to the horn.

hi low horn. both the high and low horn are stamped with the words HI or LO. so that tells you which horn you have. well there may be more to the horn story. but i spent too much on the subject than was asked for.

Thanks for such a quick reply. The horn is a LO and I found the loose yellow wire. It still has a connector on the end of it. I can't find exactly where it bolts on but I plan to test it. The yellow wire goes where on the horn? Can ground it from anywhere on the horn, say the mount?

hopefully the wire tab for power ot the horn isnt broken off. but the iwre should slip over a male tab sticking from the side of the horn. on the core support is going to be two sqarish holes on larger than the other. ther should be a j clips or also called u nut. in the larger of the two holes. the bolt goes through that threaded u nut. you can ground any part of the metal body of the horn to any ground on the truck. some replacement horns had a plastic horn attached to a metal base.

I have a LO horn on my truck and have wanted to add a HI horn. Where does one get the wire with connector to add another horn? Did the base models just come with one and the Rangers came with two, or was it an individual option?

My Ranger XLT came with a single horn.

Must have been an option.

i thought ranger and up had the hi horn. but you can find the wires and hi horns on dentside trucks and vans. or you can just make a wire to go over to the hi side horn.

You can't go up from Ranger. That was the top of the line.

ranger xlt and explorer are other higher packages in 70-72. 67-69 ranger was the top of the line.

i should have stated the years in my first post. that was my fault. the original poster had a 69 and i should have stated the correct useage because of his year of truck. so the fault lays on me really.

I took off the metal horn ring that blows the horn and the plastic hole where the horn brush was broken slightly at an angle and the brush itself was missing. I think it will work if i can put in a new horn brush. Where can I buy one of these or better yet can i make one?
