What are these??

Post by Madsen1970F100 »

OK, got it running today so must have most of electrical figured out  However, gauges worked at first but not later and just wondering if these resistors or capacitors have anything to do with it. I also know I probably do not have all my ground wires hooked in but thought that was mostly for lights. Have the short one on back of engine to the firewall connected. Wondering what these two things are and also this "extra" wire that comes out the wiring harness near the voltage regulator. I am thinking it should be a ground? its the connection with the star-like center. :hmm:

Told you I'd be back with stupid questions.......I have looked at the wiring diagrams and just too stupid to figure this out so asking for a little help.

BTW, got it running and fairly smooth though the timing appears to be quite retarded (if I am using that term correctly) should the timing light hit it at TDC or is it ok to be off like 20 degrees?? :hmm:

Thanks!! :fr:

The middle pic looks like the horn relay, I think. I am also pretty sure the star wire connection is ground also and should go right into the radiator support. IIRC it goes in were the horn relay is.

The timing is hard to say. If you have it all hooked up correctly it should read (flash) where ever it is timed. If it is running really smooth chances are you have it advanced quite a bit. Maybe 20 degrees like you said. I dont think the stock harmonic balancer reads more then 10 degrees retard. Play with the timing and light a bit and see if you can get it dialed in. As it flashes, if the light lights up to the right of the TDC line then it is advanced. Try and get it around 10 degrees advanced (to the right) and see how it runs. It should be pretty smooth, but not too smooth. If you leave it too far advanced it will ping when you drive it.

both things in the top picture go to ground with the regulator bolt. yes that is the horn relay it bolts to the inner fender, the intial timing will be set at zero. then it can go where ever it runs best at.
