No Brake lights No Rear hazzard

Post by pandnh4 »

Greetings all, Just picked up a 70 F250 CS last weekend. Having fun fixing the little things and getting it going. Replaced the turn sig canc cam this afternoon now my brake lights and rear hazard lights no workie. Checked the schematics and it looks like everything that has to do with the rear lamps flows thru the steering column. For the turn sig canc cam, I just snipped the two old wires and connected the new ones, Wasn't exactly that simple but the same more or less. What could have I boogered up? The turn sigs are also acting weird, Front works on one side, rear on the other, Both front hazards work.

my guess is the turn signal cam you put in isnt working properly. or its a aftermarket type and it isnt fitting the ford switch properly.

If they worked before, I would agree with fordman. Wrong cam, or maybe recheck the installation hookup. :hmm:

Thanks Guys, I kinda figured I was going to end up pulling the steering wheel again. At least this time it won't take as long ;-) I think I need to get back in behind where the cam sits. I think when I was tugging to get it off I may have pulled something else loose. Are there any connectors behind there? I saw two nuts, and after attempting to take one off found it's a bolt from the back side, Was fun trying to get that back on.

Thx again,

Mike.

the tss wire runs all the way down inside of the column. when pulling you may have stretched and broke or damaged a wire.

Success, sort of. Took it all apart again but this time was able to push the wires up the steering column to provide some slack making it easier to operate. Ended up putting the old cam back in, not easy considering I cut the wires down to a nub as directed. The after market cam did not appear to have the proper tension to make good contact on the back of the cam. With the old cam in, good brake lights and good rear hazard all turn signals work front and rear. Turn signals still don't cancel, but I can live with that....for now.

Good lesson learned. When removing the steering wheel, even if if feels like it should pop right off. use the wheel puller and do not bang on it from behind. Only after you have started really banging it hard from behind will it come off and when it does, it comes off real fast and with a lot of force. And yes in case you're wondering, you really do see stars when you take a hard shot to the bridge of your nose

I have had a lot of trouble with junk electrical parts for my truck. If you have time, can you tell me what you had that didn't work? And better yet, tell me what you find that works when you find it some day.
I have not had a functioning turn signal canceler since I got my truck, which doesn't bother me much because it is reflexive to switch it off anymore, but as I read your thread it made me realize that the real reason I haven't fixed it is because I don't trust anyone to get me the right parts...
Does anyone know if the turn signal assembly interchanges with the mustang? If it does, parts should be pretty easy to find.

A self canceling turn signal in our old bumps? What a world that would be! Mine likes to not let both brake lights come on if I don't hold the turn signal switch in just the right position!lol
