Pulsing cluster lights

Post by Aussie_1970 »

Hey guys my 1970 effy has a weird thing going on.....when the key is switched to accessory (without the engine on) the idiot lights (ie the oil and engine) on the cluster pulse. It is a very similar rythmic pulse to when you have an indicator on.

So it makes me think that maybe the emergency flasher is on. Only thing is I don't have an emergency on/off switch in the glovebox or anywhere else. Plus the indicator lights don't flash while it is doing this pulsing....so I would have thought I didn't have an emergency flasher

I have pulled out the cluster, glovebox, etc and I just can't find an emergency flasher can. Do they look like normal indicator cans? Where are they located?

It's not the indicator can, i disconnected that and the pulsing continued.

Other than that, there are no other electrical issues with it and the pulsing goes away when the engine is on

I am pretty sure the bumps in Australia were imported from Canada and so I don't know if there were any changes made between these and the US models??

To coin an Australian phrase, "it's got me rooted !"

cheers
Chris

About the emergency flasher. In 69 the switch was in the glove box. In 70 it was on the dash by the cigar lighter. (Ford calls it a cigar lighter). Both switches use the same connector. The emergency flasher unit looks just like the turn signal flasher and they are interchangeable. The 69 has a manual choke on the dash and in 70 they went to automatic choke and relocated the emergency flasher switch.

Both my 69 & 70 have a spring connector in the same place for the flasher unit to clip into to. This is on the right side (passenger side) of steering column on the major support. If you have a RHD, this will probably be on your left, still the passenger side.

That is what it is, as the IPVR has a pulsing power output and that is why you see the light pulse when the key is in ACC or when the key is on but the engine is not running, as this is the only time the light should be on unless you got a problem. It shouldn't be as prominent (on/off) as the turn signal flasher but you will see a pulse (bright/dim) to it.
The emergency flasher is a Racer Z stated on the side of the column support, as seen in this drawing. http://www.fordification.com/tech/wirin ... lights.jpg course with the right side steer not sure how they did the wiring for it but would assume a direct flip...

Thanks mate, so is the pulsing at the acc setting the normal condition? Yes it does go away when the engine running on mine too.

If so that's surprisingly good news!
