fuel guage works sometimes

hey i need some help with this.i have a new sending unit and sometimes my fuel guage works and sometimes it dont.any thoughts .thank you in advance. :help:

Mine was acting up a month or so ago, it was the float. Price for repair...$3.00 float! Priceless! :thup:

SOLD-71 F-350 dually flatbed, 302 / .030 over V-8 with a "baby"C-6, B & M truckshifter, Dana70/4.11 ratio, intermittent wipers, tilt steering, full LED lighting on the flat bed, and no stereo yet (this way I can hear the rattles to diagnose)! SOLD!
Many Ford bumps / one 76' EB / and several dents through the years.
A lot of "oddball" Ford parts collected from working on them for 34 years now!

probably a loose connection in the wiring.

Does it have dual tanks with the dual sender switch? If so, I'd look at the wiring on the switch like Fordman and towtrucker suggested.
Are you getting voltage to the sending unit?
Maybe also trace the fuse for it, (mine was kinda' rusted-had to clean up the contacts with a small wire brush).

no its just stock tank behind the seat.i do get power to the sending unit.if i ground out the power wire the guage reads full

Believe or not, mine does the same thing and when it does i wiggle the ign key a little one way or the other and it starts to work. Funniest thing.

I would ohm out (check the resistance) of the sending unit. I can't remember what the value (number) should be, but I believe it's in the above link to the "fuel tank tech".
