71 washer pump removal

Post by DMiller »

Hey guys,
How is the internal windshield washer pump removed? Does the tank top come off?
I just bought a used tank w/pump, and I am afraid I might break it removing the pump.
thanks for any help.

there is a star looking spring washer thing that comes out from the outside around the pump. you pick at it and get under it to kind of relase the tension on it and dig it out of the hole. then the pump comes out.

Thanks fordman,
There was a lot of corrosion on the friction washer, it broke during removal, but no damage to the tank.
Of course after taking the pump out and testing it......works fine... I now have to find another washer.

yea i bet those friction washers would be hard to find without buying a pump. maybe one can be found at a junkyard. those pumps were used in many fords through the years. even in the 80's cars and trucks.

The washers can be a real PIA. I usually wind up siliconing the pump back in...
