Can't hear my flasher...

Post by thorn1968 »

OK...I know I'm getting older...but my hearing is still good. Just don't tell my wife!

I've replaced my flasher with a 552 and now I can't hear it! The old one finally quit. It was blinking really slow, but would speed up as the engine went off idle.

Has anyone had any luck finding a "loud flasher"? This one at Napa looks promising: http://www.napaonline.com/Search/Detail ... 28+2028016 It's an LF12 if the link doesn't work.

I replaced mine with one from Napa. I can hear it over the constant ringing in my ears. So I guess it is loud enough. Why do you want a loud one, as long as it is working?
My sister said she has had experiance with a really loud Flasher. He was yelling as he was lead away in handcuffs.

Well I'll honest with you here...the cancel cam doesn't work, so I'm famous for going around the world to the left all day! I don't think it's the TSS as the wheel has been changed. I think they left out the dowel pin, or it's the wrong size/position...everything else on this old girl has been messed up, so I'm not ready to open another can or worms. The old flasher sounded great, until it quit.

You guys crack me up. ROF-LMAO  :D

Ask your parts guy if they have other styles of flashers or try another store.

If you really want noise, you could get something like a "piezo" and wire it into the flash circuit. A piezo (all three vowels are pronounced in long form) is an electronic noise maker. Usually a shrill, high-pitched noise. We used to use them in car alarms as part of the idiot section to let the user know if the alarm did something like become enabled/disabled. From what I recall, there is no adjustment for the volume and the pitch is very annoying. The piezo's that we used were about the diameter of a quarter and half inch thick, or so.

A quick spin around the internet comes up with:

Extra loud / musical flashers:
http://www.jcwhitney.com/turn-signal-fl ... ilTabPanel

Radio Shack Chime:
http://www.fixya.com/cars/t2515664-turn ... oud_enough

Talk about using motorcycle flasher units:
http://www.thumpertalk.com/forum/archiv ... 99781.html

Suppose you could always glue a small dixi cup or can to the flasher unit to amplify the sound emitted by it too....

Well I stopped by Napa this morning and picked up the loud flasher. Holly crap it's loud!! I could hear it behind the truck while checking the turn signals. :D It's missing the little nub that snaps it into the back of the cluster, so I just tucked it behind the wires. It seems snug enough not to go anywhere. The last thing I wanted was for it to be bouncing around in there causing another rattle!

 So now you're going around the world in reverse?

Put a piece of tape over it to quiet it down. If it's still too loud wrap it in a layers of tape around it until it's at a level you like. Don't worry about over heating it.

I am glad you got a loud one. I been thinking it over, this Old Fart may go the same route. All those years in the engineering spaces on ship doesn't help the hearing. Not to mention the nice ringing tune playing in my ears.

Make your OWN loud flasher!!!!

Post by edglenn »

Hey guys, I used to sell turn signals on EBAY for this exact reason. Here's what you do:
Get a 12vdc piezo from Radio Shack ($4.00) and a 552 flasher relay from the car parts store.
Figure out which of the two pins on the flasher is positive, and which is negative, when it's plugged into the relay socket. You'll have to use a voltage meter, or know how to use a 12v lamp. Hot side to ground is positive. Remember, igintion on, and turn signal on, to find voltage :-)
Then, cut wires to length, and solder the red piezo wire to the positive flasher terminal, and the black wire to the negative flasher terminal. Solder the wires right on the sides of the spades, up close to the flasher base. Don't overheat the terminal, or it'll ruin the flasher filament.
I usually used a little shrink-tubing to protect the wires routed along side of the flasher. Use some hot-melt glue to attach the piezo to the top of the flasher relay. It should look like a regular flasher, with a piezo on top. Nice and neat, and it'll fit into most tight spaces.
Plug the flasher into the socket, and try your signal. The ignition will need to be "on".
When the turn signal is engaged, the piezo will screech in between flasher pulses, until canceled. The voltage passes through the piezo while the flasher de-energizes, then the voltage flows straight through to the turn-signal lamps when the flasher energizes. Back and forth.
If it doesn't work, you got the red and black wires reversed. It's backwards on Chevy vs. Fords.
Also, this might not work if you've converted to LED tailights, because the load isn't sufficient. Same for a "Heavy Duty" flasher for trailer loads. Sometimes works, sometimes doesn't.
BTW: This works REALLY well for you Harley riders, too.
Hope that helps!

Ed,

I used to use the piezo buzzers on the golf carts I was responsible for a a maintenance mgr. but I think you've got the best idea yet for them. Most of our trucks have performance type dual exhaust of some sort, (ok...and some of us that are a little hard of hearing) this would be a really good answer! I also think I'll do this upgrade to my bump, (if i can find this thread when I find time to do the upgrade).
This would be a good "how-to" in the tech section!

Jeff, (and everyone)
If you need a beeping turn signal, let me know. I can solder one up and ship it to you.
I was selling them on EABY for $19.95, free shipping.
I can list it on EBAY, also, if you'd rather. I accept PAYPAL, of course.
