What size Batteries does this thing take?
Ok so i need to purchase a new battery for my truck. I need to know what the cold cranking anps I should shoot for is and if there is a specific battery size or type I should be looking for to help with all of the things I have on my truck. The winch and dump bed shouldn't be a draw unless used however I could see the winch possible being used while the truck is off if the truck was stuck or broke down. thanks for reading.

Re: What size Batteries does this thing take?
i thought it was group 27 battery. which would be a 27 F F for ford. because the battery terminals are opposite than other batteries. how ever i read that battery spec have changed and the group number has now changed to either agroup 33 or 35. but dont forget that it is a ford so the cable will still reach the terminals.

Re: What size Batteries does this thing take?
I spoke with Les Schwaub today to get a new battery. THey suggested using a deep cell marine/rv battrery in the truck because of the winch and dump box on it. Does any one see any issues with this? i believe he told me the deep cell battery had around 650-700 cold cranking amps. if no one sees a issue with it I will pick it up today.

From what I understand about deep cycle batteries I don't think I'd use one for starting. They are designed to be drawn down almost all the way and then recharged. I don't think the battery would last as long in the truck. If you wanted something dedicated to the winch then I'd say to get one.

That is FALSE Lead acid batteries have no memory, draining them down all the way will kill them faster then anything. Deep Cycle batteries are built using the same basic materials as the regular batteries but have thicker plates to handle greater discharging (bigger reserves) without killing them. Look at the info posted in the link that Fordman posted above all this info is in there.Bumpside Collector wrote:From what I understand about deep cycle batteries I don't think I'd use one for starting. Yes, I would go that rout beings you have the electric pump motor that you will be using at times when the engine is off, it will survive this use better.tanusfarms wrote:I spoke with Les Schwaub today to get a new battery. Re: What size Batteries does this thing take?
ok so after talking with a few people i went with a group 27 battery, i don't plan on using the dump unless the truck is running and i needed the cranking amps to ensure the winch gets enough power, i belive they told me the battery is in the 1100 cranking amps range. they said it was the highest they had

Re: What size Batteries does this thing take?
i like mine so far the only complaints I have are when I got to start it it acts like the batterys dead for about 2 secs then cranks like normal. Also the winch still doesn't have as much pulling power as it should. I think I might need to rebuild the winch. Anyone on here know anything about winches?

Re: What size Batteries does this thing take?
if its electric it is just a motor. armature bruches and the magnets. basically. slow turning could be low power to it or if its real slow dragging it could be the end bushings.

Check your Ground cable to the motor for good connection, also check that both +/- cables to the winch (it should have it's own cables to the battery) are good and don't have any corrosion on them.tanusfarms wrote:I go to start it it acts like the batterys dead for about 2 secs then cranks like normal. Re: What size Batteries does this thing take?
The speed the winch operates at seems to be normal but it doesn't seem to have the power it should. its a 8000 pound winch. I would figure it should be able to move the truck without needing any block and tackle.
I am new to winching so I could be wrong here.
As far as the connections the cable from the negative to the motor is brand new. It is currently ran to one of the mounting lobes on the starter. The positive cable to the winch looks clean but the insulation has visable cracks on it. It doesn't appear that there is a negative connection going to the winch at all. Being as the winch is bolted to the bumper and my bumber is welded to my frame. And if my memory serves me correctly the frame is grounded to the motor (If I am wrong on that one let me know) so if the above is correct why the need for the negative cable to the winch from the battery?

Re: What size Batteries does this thing take?
The ground from the battery to the engine is good, but unless someone put a large ground cable to the frame from the engine you don't have a big/good enough ground for the winch. The motor mounts are rubber mounted so there is not a ground connection there, the cab is grounded from a small ground wire from the back of the engine to the cab and this one is not big enough for the winch. You might look around and see if there is some wire from the motor to the frame and that it is at least the same size as the battery cable.
The Positive wire is probably fine as long as it is large enough and you don't see any corrosion at the ends or around those cracks, however with the cracks it will deteriorate the wire inside over time.

Re: What size Batteries does this thing take?
so would a poor ground to the winch still allow it to work but at a decreased capacity?
