I have seen a thread some weeks ago about trailer hitches. I have a trailer wiring port on the rear bumper with 4 pins. Does it need to be converted? I see references to 7 pin connectors. Also, is a 3500 lb ball strong enough? I am researching the trailer issue; a little trailer is one thing, a travel trailer is another. My bumper has a 3/4 inch hole where the old hitch ball was. The hitch balls I have seen that fit that hole are 3500lb limit. How much weight is my bumper capable of? Can I just make a bigger hole? 1971 f250 cs 360 2v c6 d60 3.73
Thanks.

Re: Trailer hitch help
The wiring will all be determined from what your trailer needs, the 4 wire is for just the R/L turns/brake lights (2 of the wires), marker lights, and Ground. If your trailer has trailer brakes then you will need to wire in a 6 or 7 pin plug with Power and brake control wires.
The stock type rear bumpers are not rated for much, what you have there is about it... For anything more you need to install a frame mount receiver hitch for it, then you can get the stinger (hitch insert) that is rated for your trailer, which may include an equalizer system (7,500-10,000).
I think it was in the 80's that they started stamping on the bumper what they were rated for.

Re: Trailer hitch help
there are several types of trailer plug connectors. what you need or have to use is determined by what you have on your trailer. it will probably be a flat 4 plug on the trailer. you can also buy some adapters to go from one size to the other and so forth.
