Battery Ground - Clarification
I have a small battery grounding issue. (Or so I think.)
My battery is grounded to the exhaust manifold stud on the passenger side of the vehicle. I have seen a few posts that indicate that is the correct location. I have a 1970 F 250 - 360 camper special. The problem is that the stud is quite rusted.
I have seen people indicate that the grounding location is just below the alternator mounting point. (I would love to move it there, but the lug on the cable is way to small to fit on that bolt.) Originaly was there a different type of grounding strap with a bigger lug? If so where can I get one?
If not, then where is the correct location to ground the battery? I know that a rusty manifold bolt is not the best grounding location.
Thanks in advance.

my dad has his bolted to the top alternator bolt. my truck has it bolted to the block.
you can get a new end for your cable which you can solder or crimp on at any parts store. or you can just buy a new cable with the right size end which is a good option if the cable is old, its likely already corroded and brittle from being mounted to the exhaust manifold

Re: Battery Ground - Clarification
The exact location is irrelevant. As long as the connection is good you can pretty much ground anywhere.

Re: Battery Ground - Clarification
A little to generic... It has to be grounded to the engine, it doesn't mater where on the engine but to the block itself is best. Most I've seen are mounted to one of the motor mount bolts or to a bolt boss on the side of the block itself.CommrclDiver wrote:The exact location is irrelevant. Re: Battery Ground - Clarification
Thanks for the input guys. The question I would like the answer to is:
What is the factory configuration for the connection of the battery ground to the the engine block on a 1970 F250 camper special 360ci. It is currently grounded to the stud on the exhaust manifold, which is very rusty and not providing the best grounding. I am restoring the truck to factory specs.
Thanks,
Carlo

Re: Battery Ground - Clarification
It's supposed to be grounded to the block, just behind the alternator.
I think I've got one of the correct NOS cables, but it's at home, and I'm about 90 miles away.
If you're not in a hurry, I can check on Thursday to verify.
Edit: By the way, IIRC, it's a 7/16" bolt...

Why is it that there's seldom time to fix it right the first time, but there's always time to fix it right the second time???

Yes, as Fordman noted it is the boss on the side of the block just behind the main alternator mounting bolt. The grounding bolt also retains the ground wire from the alternator. Hawkrod

Re: Battery Ground - Clarification
Thanks for the information. I found the bolt.. 3/4" in the boss right below the alternator. i had to drill out the lug on the cable, but now it is in the right location. I did not notice that the alternator is grounded at the same location. Should i add a little strap from the alternator to the new battery grounding location?
Thanks again,
Carlo
