Tapping a 12V circuit?
How do ya'll do it? Best way? I've done my share of sticking wires behind fuses and shaving insulation, twisting on a tap and then black taping it but what would be the best, i.e. certified electrician style, way? Going to try Duraspark conversion and want my taps to be clean, secure and correctly done. Thanks for listening appreciate any recommendations.

Solder and heat shrink tubing will give you the best connection and will look clean.
You can actually get the heat shrink tubing in different colors, so you may be able to find the right colors to match your wires.

Why is it that there's seldom time to fix it right the first time, but there's always time to fix it right the second time???
That's not an oil leak

Re: Tapping a 12V circuit?

When I put in my Duraspark/MSD set up, I ran the power wires in with original looms over to the solenoid and then re-taped the looms and put Painless Powerbraid over the new tape. I also got my switched power from the 3 wire plug off of the ign. switch and I also used the original switched power wire from the deleted TRS system. I mounted my MSD over in the original battery location and ran the wires from the MSD and solenoid area taped to the original right side loom, through the firewall grommet and taped to the harness underneath the dash across to the left side.

Where do get your heat shrink tubing from? I've been thinking about getting a soldering iron so now's a good time. Thanks for the suggestion!
Bobby, how'd you tap into that ignition plug? Same concept would apply to a number of applications. I appreciate the tip!
What about those splice clip things? The one's that you put your tap wire in and snap it to the source. Are those reliable? Thanks for all your help!

I do not like to use Scotchlocks (clip type splice). The 3 wire plug is off of the back of the ignition switch and has one extra blank female port for switched power. I soldered and shrink-tubed a male bullet connector terminal for the 3 wire plug. Heat shrink tube is available at any auto parts store or home improvement center. You can use a heat gun to shrink the tube or a Bic lighter if you do not own a heat gun.sargentrs wrote:Where do get your heat shrink tubing from? Radio Shack also has the multi-colored tubing assortment, IIRC.

if you're not skilled in soldering then the next best thing is scotchlok's(quicksplice) put a dab of clear rtv in the connector and then wrap with black tape. if you don't seal these connectors they will corrode the whole harnesssargentrs wrote:How do ya'll do it?
