i have recently bought a 71 f100, told to be a 390 but theres no way. ok my problem is the charging. i replaced the voltage reg and battery and had alt tested.... worked good for 2 days, then left me stranded with dead batt. got it charged put it back in truck then ran it to parts store and had it tested. said bad reg, changed it... again. drove it home parked it then tried to start it a few hours later, nothing. HELP!!!

Check this wiring diagram: http://www.fordification.com/tech/wirin ... _quick.jpg
Check the battery voltage while the truck is running.

Re: my nitemare
you beat me too it with the link. so what i can say is does your truck have all four gauges or only two gauges and two warning light in the instrument cluster. that determines how your wiring is. have the truck retested while running to determine if it is charging or not. http://www.fordification.com/tech/wirin ... _quick.jpg

Re: my nitemare
ok thanks. so it seems like i have to few wires. but the diag doesn't show connection points, just a round alt and rectangle box for the volt reg. and my volt reg only has 3 out of 4 plugs useed in the harnesss. any help with that? i wanted to run new wires from alt to reg but not sure from where to where

i have 4 gauges... none work. speedo and brights notifacation light work. had it tested while running yesterday. the test said bad reg. so i had them swap the new reg for another new reg thinking maybe faulty. it ran strong home but wouldn't hardly idle in the driveway

Re: my nitemare
This may sound silly but make sure and change the battery cables if you haven’t already. They are one of the cheep fixes...... Right after I got my truck I was having the same problem. I changed the battery, the alternator, reg, & even the starter. But it still kept going dead. Put on new cables after talking with my mechanic friend & never had another problem. very very frustrating!!!!

Re: my nitemare
I have started scanning any and all diagrams and images I have found helpful while resurecting the the poor battered wiring harness in my 67 f-100. I ended up getting a keep it clean kit for a hundred bucks on Ebay, and have since vowed that next time I will just save my money and buy a plug and play harness. LOL Anywho, voltage regulator wiring diagram...

Re: my nitemare
There have been many that have gotten Multiple bad NEW parts, especially Voltage regulators, starter solenoids, and alternators. I would take it back and check it (voltage regulator) out again and also check out the new one before you leave the parking lot.

Re: my nitemare
Make sure your voltage regulator is grounded. They ground through the base.
