Autozone lies
Keep your receipts!!! I bought a lifetime warranty starter 2 years ago. The bendix started going out about 4 months ago so 2 months ago I replaced it. Today the whole starter shorts out internally. By now I had thought I had bought the starter at O'Reilly's. Too much bad blood with their parts failing too fast. So I go to Autozone and get the lifetime starter for 49.99. When they handed me the new one I got suspicious because the rebuilder tag on the new starter and the tag on the 2 year old starter had the same rebuilder codes. So I asked to see if I bought it. Funny the computer locks up and won't show any prior purchases. So I bite the bullet and leave with the new starter. I bolt it in and I thought to myself the snout doesn't look right.
Spin the motor and all hell breaks loose. 2 more tests and I yank it out and the bendix at rest sticks out far enough to touch the starter gear and the ring gear when disengaged. I take it back they say no way that the solenoid had to be bad and stayed locked in and kept the drive engaged. I said test it. I had to lie to them and tell them that the starter wire on the solenoid was disconnected after the first time to see of the solenoid was sticking and we would set it on the B+ side to spin it then remove it to test. So they put it on the tester, the tester won't run the starter and tells us unknown error.
So I have to drive across town to get another one and holding them together the snout is different. The new one like my old one was relieved to clear the back of the flywheel. The one that did not work did not have the relief and the bendix was out farther about 1/8 inch.
So I do have a question what does a 429/460 starter look like? The FE starter has 3 bolts does the 429/460 one also have 3 bolts?
I also posted this on Autozone's Website. Funny looking at the pics on O'Reilly's website and on Autozones website they look like they are now selling the same rebuilder's parts.

Re: Autozone lies
i think they are 3 bolt starters but i have never realy looked at a 460 starter. i know the 351m c6 transmission i had had a 3 botl starter on it. one of my reletives used the starter from the 351m on his 360.

Re: Autozone lies
I will go look at the auto websites.
Here is what I got from a custom starter site.
FORD – V8, 221-351 Small Block, Automatic
Transmission, FE 332 – 427 Big Block, Arias/Root
429, 460 Big Block. 6 cyl. 300 cid with Motorcraft
SA737 starter, 4 cyl. 2.0 2.3L all. (Offset dimension:
0.740"
I can tell right now they don't have a clue. I just found out a 429 starter is 2 bolt.

Re: Autozone lies
You're in luck. I have my 460 on the stand out in the garage. Took a look at my starter and it is a two bolt.
The part number is D2AF-11131-DA and has a rebuilder tag of 543A. I'm pretty sure I got it at Autozone, but it's been a few years.

Also, 429/460 starters are available with or without attached GM style solenoid.

They didn't ask for a number, they always ask me for my number to put into their data base. That way I dont need my receipts, hope you dont get the problems that has happen to me, I always test my starters, alternators, anything they test for free that I buy I test it before I leave. Like I said I hope that is you last problem. I know you pain when it was my alternator problem I had to walk a mile there to get it tested and walk a mile back atleast 3 times total because of those remanufactored

Re: Autozone lies
I went round and round with Autozone starters last year about this time. The 5.0 in my Tbird lost a starter, went to Autozone and replaced with the gold Duralast. Lasted about a week. Thought it was a fluke, went back and got a replacement, brought it back, lasted for three days. Thought maybe it was in my starting system. Replaced starter relay, battery cables, tested the battery and alternator and because the ignition switch was a little funky, I replaced it too. Put in yet another Autozone replacement, lasted about another week. Took it back, said give me back my money, went down the street to Napa, bought a starter, and that was the end of that.

Re: Autozone lies
At least this one free spins a little bit after you drop over to run from start so it at least is not bound up. The starter they gave me first turns out to be a 351 starter that is why it rubbed my ring gear.

remanufactured parts like that are total junk if you have enough of them they anchor boats pretty good I got like 20 some brand new starters around that are only good for parts like drives and brushes and noses get an original mototcraft or autolite they are the best

Re: Autozone lies
there is a difference between manual starters and automatic. i got a toyota pickup from a guy because his ford van wouldn't start and he replaced the battery, cables, solinoid, starter, the starter would turn then lock up and nobody could figure it out until i looked at it and swapped it for the starter for an automatic and suprise it worked he gave me the toyota as payment good trade for 10 or 15 minutes work.

Re: Autozone lies
Autozone, Napazone, Oreillyzone, all the same junk, different boxes.
Saving the receipts sometimes doesn't help much I just noticed last night, I was going through the receipts on various parts I've purchased for the '69 over the years. The traditional receipts, carbon copies, dot-matrix, even hand written, were all fine. But all the ones on thermal-paper were so faded most of them were completely unreadable. Not even worth saving.
