Uggg, you have headers....if you can't find the golden spot by moving the starter around you're probably going to have to either disconnect the exhaust from the header, (preferable if that'll give you the room you need), or disconnect the header from the head.

Looks to me like taking it off at the head is going to be my only option. I cant even get to the exhaust and header union on one bolt. Looks like the tranny guys couldn't get it back on either. Is there something I can do to avoid this if the starter needs changing again? I really don't want to re do the exhaust. What are my options?

Didn't realize you had headers. Go ahead and loosen them up. You'll never get it out otherwise...

Okay guys. I am going to do that now. Should I be looking for some sort of heat shield? How are headers different than normal? Is there a normal? I can't remember having this kind of problem with the old 67, when I changed that starter....

That's one of the big hazards of headers and one of the reason's I'll never run them myself. Not much help I know, just my :2cents:

Yeah, headers are not stock. Someone 'upgraded' your exhaust. With stock manifolds the starter will just about drop out. That's the reason for my warning above about not dropping it on your face. You don't usually see starter heat shields on a big block Ford, well I don't anyway, but it may not be a bad idea to extend the life of your new starter. Careful not to break those exhaust to head bolts!

Your engine breaths better with the increased exhaust flow. Increased HP and mileage.

Okay... What point do I call the real mechanics in? :-)
I dropped the headers completely, Unbolted them at the head, and at the exhaust. I can get the starter in, but then cannot seem to get the headers back in. Seems there is no way to jiggle the two at the same time to make it all go back together. I need to clone myself. The wife helps, but it is a bit too taxing. Guess I need to keep wiggling?

You'll probably have to loosen the collector on the header to get everything aligned.

whats a collector?
I have taken the wole ball of wax out of the engine compartment. my wife lifted it out. I just saw a steel collar around where it hooks to the exhaust pipe underneath

I guess what the real question is, is can I put the header back in after installing the starter? Also, I have dented the brass cover on the new starter trying to get it in there. Is that going to be a problem?

If you've got the header disconnected from the exhaust pipe, you should be able to get things back together.

Keep the header loose, but in the engine compartment.

Put the starter in place with the header hanging from one or two bolts.

Don't worry about the dent, that cover is just to protect the drive engagement lever. Lots of air in there!!

I have everything totally disconnected. I will just get the starter in, then just wiggle the header back in?
