Hey all,
I had my truck running fine a couple of days ago but today when i tried to start her of my 1200 amp starter, she just wouldn't turn over. Not even one turn.
I am guessing starter motor, possibly from being over worked recently whilst i messed with flat batterys and bad wiring.
What do you all reckon?
Cheers,
Ross.
Until now cars have been like what water out of a tap is to most city folk.
Turn the handle and it just flows/Turn the key and she just goes.
I have finally realised there is an engine on the otherside of the firewall !!!
Now...I just need to figure out how to pipe the power to my peddle!!!
Ross,
It could be the starter, but then it could be lots of things.
Do you hear any clicking sounds when you try to start it, specifically I'm wondering if your start solenoid is actuating?
If you have a meter or test light, try checking the voltage at the starter while having a helper trying to start it. If you have full voltage at the starter and it's not trying to do anything then it would be a pretty good guess that the starter is bad. But even then I would be sure to check the electrical connections at the starter.
Starters do go bad, but it's not the first thing I would suspect in this situation. I would look at dirty/loose connections, start solenoid, starter switch and starter. All the above could be the culprit.
Sorry that I'm not narrowing it down for you, but it really could be any of the above, so it's going to take a little trouble shooting on your part to nail it down.
As seattle 67 pointed out, check your connections! especially your engine to chassis ground. i had issues with mine and replaced the starter and it turned out to be a bad connection in the end.
You may not have narrowed it down Dan but you have certainly given me a great starting point.
I am heading off for a week but when i get back i will grab myself a voltage meter and start working my way through.(after cleaning all the connections)
Thanks mate.

Would this happen to be my engine to chassis ground?
Thanks for your help guys. I wont be able to test your theories for a week but will post when i figure it.
Cheers,
Ross.

This might be redundant but sometimes happens to my truck: If your truck is an automatic, try starting it in neutral or wiggle the shifter back and forth. Sometimes that switch under the steering column just doesn't quite get all the way over.
Let us know.

correct me if im wrong because i cant really tell from the pictures.... but looking the the wiring diagram(http://www.fordification.com/images/sch ... gauges.jpg) shouldnt that wire which is grounded off the solenoid to the vregulator go from the vregulator to the alternator?? that would cause a short out no?
your engine to chasis ground should be a wire coming directly off the block to the chassis. i created my own because the factory one wasnt giving a ood enough connection so i ran a connection from one of the bolts on the starter to the frame where there would be no issue with it not being given a ground.
