Wiring burning out.

Post by FTrucknewbie »

Hey,

I just went to move my 70 F100 using a 1600 amp Jump Starter. This usually kicks her over fine but this morning i noticed rising smoke and found a wire had started burning through.

I have taken some pics of the said wiring and any advise would be appreciated.

I need to move her real soon as my 68 rolling shell turns up in a few hours and its now her shed.

In anticipation,
Ross

Until now cars have been like what water out of a tap is to most city folk.
Turn the handle and it just flows/Turn the key and she just goes.
I have finally realised there is an engine on the otherside of the firewall !!!
Now...I just need to figure out how to pipe the power to my peddle!!!

Yup, FTrucknewbie them's toasted wires all right...

Looks like ya let all the magic smoke get loose too...
Can't put that stuff back in ya know...

A couple of things come directly into mind...
Was the power jumper hooked up right???
If so, you got a dead short somewhere in that circuit.
I'd definitely start chasing wires, and replacing them with the proper gauge wires.
Check the schematics in the tech section and figure out which wire goes to what and start replacing them one buy one until it works right.
That's how you get to know yer truck...
Perhaps a little more than you want to...

Thanks for that kaptnkaos,

That was "magic" smoke?I wondered why it smelt so good when i inhaled it.

When the buzz wore off i managed to separate the black wire which was the one burning out, from all the other wires and she started no prob.

She will be getting a complete rewire when i pull her out soon.

She has now been relegated to the yard whilst the new shell takes pride of place in the shed.

I reckon the wires burnt out this morning because she knew she was being evicted and was sulking."Bloody cars with personality!!"

Thanks again.

There is a good chance that you had a bad / dirty / loose connection on the big ground wire going to the block. If electricity see's a road block, it will look for another path. It appears the smaller wire was the path it found and that wire was too small to carry the current of the starter.
