gauges not reading
So we just started up the truck the other day for the first time which was pretty sweet, but we notices that we only have 1 out of 4 gauges working.
Our amp guage is the only one working, so fuel, temp, and oil pressure arent. How might i go about troubleshooting this? Would it be possible to do without taking the cluster out?

re: gauges not reading
Does your instrument cluster have a circuit board or is it wired? I had the same problem with mine because some of the contacts on the board moved.

Its wired.
I grounded out my temp wire and fuel sender wire and there was no gauge movement. Im assuming this means that there is something in my wiring or in the gauges?

Sounds like the instrument panel voltage regulator went south. The regulator is a small silver box on the back of the instrument panel. It makes 12 volts into 5 volts for the instruments.

Thats what i thought. But then that wouldnt explain for the oil pressure gauge not working would it? that regulator only runs the temp and fuel gauges, doesnt it?

Nope, the IPVR supplies power to all three gauges.67Merc' wrote:bluef250 wrote:Sounds like the instrument panel voltage regulator went south. The regulator is a small silver box on the back of the instrument panel. It makes 12 volts into 5 volts for the instruments.

You can see it in this diagram http://fordification.com/images/schemat ... gauges.jpg

re: gauges not reading
So i just got my new gauge voltage regulator and ive installed it. Im still not getting any reading from gas, temp, or oil pressure. ive ran my wires and i have continuity to all the sensors on the block. does anyone else have any ideas about which would be going wrong here?

re: gauges not reading
If you have a meter, check that you have 12 volts going to the IVPR, and a pulsing 5.5 volts coming out. One side of the gauges gets the pulsing 5.5 volts, the senders send the ground to the gauges.
So in theory, if you have 5.5 volts on one side of the gauge, grounding out the other terminal on the gauge should make it peg out. So, if you have a pulsing 5.5 volts at the gauge, run a jumper wire from ground to the other post on the gauge and see if the gauge pegs out. If they do, then do the same thing at the senders, ground them out and see if the gauge pegs out. If they do, then your gauges and associated wiring are good. At this point either it's your sender is bad or the senders are not seeing ground for some reason.

re: gauges not reading
ok so i got them working! it turns out the previous owner decided to try some rewiring and well... i guess thats why he had an aftermarket gauge set on there. there was no power to the instrument panel voltage regulator. thanks for your help guys.
