Bump trailer wiring ???

Post by kaptnkaos »

Hey Guys...

Spent the day workin' on the bump trailer. I made some good progress.
The batteries were dead in my camera so no, I didn't get any pics. :(

Because the wiring is old and and has been butchered so badly,
I am going to make a new harness for it.
The stock wiring just has 4 wires...
I am pretty confident that making the new trailier harness won't be too hard.
Where I get confused is that I want to install a standard 6 pole round plug on my pickup... there isn't anything there now.

I have plenty enough 6 wire cable to run from the truck to the trailer.
I want to be able to plug any standard 6 round plug in the pickup side and have it work.

Has anyone done this or can anyone tell me how to make that work ???

I thank you in advance,

Allen,
Use a 'RV' type flat blade plug like this.
Image
that way when you get another camper, it should already have the correct plug. And the new plugs show the color coding right on the plug, so its really simple to wire. A nice thing also with these is you can charge the trailer battery (if equipped) off the tow vehicle.
I just re-did both my trailer and my tow lights to the flat blade plug, and re-wired my Dually to match.

I'll try and find the wiring diagram I used when I did up my trailer. If you have any questions, feel free to call!

I second the 7 blade plug over the 6 pin plug... The blade type has a LOT less problems with bad connection issues then the pin one because of the design... Plus that is what all new trucks with tow package wiring have... you can get plug in adaptors to go from the 7 blade type to all the others...
No one makes any easy plug in connector for the truck side like you can get for the new stuff... you'll have to splice into the wires at the back of the truck...

Hey guys..

Thanks for the info.
I bought a trailer wiring kit, that is like the one in 72Highboy4x4's diagram.
How does that hook up to the rear lights?
Each side has 3 wires going to the tail light.
The diagram only shows two?
On the truck end...
If I go with the blade style hook up then I would have 7 things to hook up...
I know the big one in the middle is the hot one... what happens with the other six ??? :D

The center one is not power like one would think... Check this one out http://www.etrailer.com/faq_wiring.aspx

On the wires you got the third one is either Backup lights or possibly Ground...

I just rewired my bump trailer 2 days ago. The wiring harness was patched and a total mess so I ran new wire from the connector at the taillights to the plug-in connector at the tongue. I still use the old round six-prong plug in because everything I own is set up with that. I think the flat plug type is better tho, just don't feel like changing everything over right now.

NOW I'm confused. The center connector on a 7 blade is shown in the diagram as AUX power. Did I miss somethinng?

Also, the diagram suggests 12 gauge wire for it. Seems that if you're going to run aux power in a trailer (toy hauler, etc) that's a LONG run from the battery to the back of the truck, and you might be pulling a reasonable amount of power from it. Wouldn't it be prudent to use a larger wire?

It's listed as "AUX" not "AUX POWERâ€Â

AH!

Thanks.

I'm fixing my trailer wiring this week, so this really helps. I think, however, I'll overkill on both the + and the ground. Sure can't hurt.

Hey Thunderfoot...

I wanted to run this by ya before I did it.
I am thinking of running a 12/3 stranded cord from the trailer plug back to the tail-lights on the trailer.
Then using a split 4wire (two wires to each side) to go from the cord to the lights.
I bought one of the tow rig hookups that has both the 7 blade and the 4 flat plugs so I don't have ta use an adaptor.
I figured that way I could hook up the bump trailer with the 4flat
and would have the 7blade for a camper...
let me know what ya think...

Hey I accidently, deleted the PM with yer addy...
ya wanna send it to me again ?

I think I follow you correctly and should be ok just remember to run a ground wire on the 4th pin through the connector so as to ground the trailer to the truck...

PM sent also
