so when wiring in an aftermarket fuel gauge and powering the sender with the correct 6volt pulse, would you wire the gauge with 12volts and limit the output signal or limit the voltage feeding the gauge?

A nasty military bomb trick wire twelve volts from the headlights to the fuel sending unit.
Though I left out the voltage regulator on a race truck and the gauge worked fine it just bounced all over the place when driving.
The voltage limiter averages out the 12 volts to six by sampling the current and holding it to a lower level. Since the gauge only sees power part of the time the sender swings gets averaged out.
