Looking at wiring harness'....got me confused.

Alright, im guessing I just need your basic 18 circuit kit, but im not so sure what to look for quality wise, or much anything else for that matter.

I am looking at the 18 circuit kit from hotrodwires.com:

The only problem I see with this one, is that it is all GM color coded, will that make installation a pain in my "derriere" or should it be fine going wire by wire?

Also, I am looking at the 18 circuit from painless:

The only problem with THIS one, is it is ONLY 12 circuits....I plan on running audio equipment and the like in this as well, and possibly power windows/locks. This presents a problem.....I guess I could use their "non-specific" harness if needed?

http://painless.r-catalog.com/pg-lkp/listparts.asp This is the universal "truck" harnes...but it is also GM coded, is this the norm with wiring harnesses?

And lastly, I am looking at the EZ wiring "EZ 21" harness...


Which of these do you guys think would be the best for me to use when rewiring my truck, hopefully the last time for the rest of its life.

I'd get the Painless harness for a vintage Ford Truck- they have them ready to go.

When I first bought my truck I bought a Hot Rod wires kit as my harness was shot. It was not worth paying money for. I would not recomend to anyone.

Although I've never used them I've heard good things about Ron Francis. I would check them out

I personaly am leaning torwards the painless simply because their wire is bullet proof as they describe it, backed by a lifetime warranty. They offer real good tech support and it's pretty much painless if it's already connected to the fuse box which leaves only to ground and route to your prefrence.

will look into the ron francis and painless both a little more exclusively this time. thanks guys.

im guessing these harnesses are wired enough for window/locks/radio when I get to that point?


edit: holy cow...are you guys REALLY paying 600+ for a wiring harness??

I think the painless harness made specifically for our years of trucks runs about that. I would have got that one but it doesn't come made for power windows and door locks. So I bought the 21 circuit from painless instead. Haven't even opened it yet to tell you exactly how complicated it is. It was about $350 which is ok if it's guaranteed for life. I have some friends that are geniuses in dc current so I'll be learning shortly......let me know about your progress.

GOing to go painless on mine with a 18 circuit gm wired. SInce I'm putting a Ididit tilt column and it is chevy based it will work out great in my application.

looks like a may go with ron francis. he emailed me back VERY quickly, and helped with every question i asked. Cant hardly beat that. not a bad price either at 419.00.

Well I just emailed him and going to see what he tells me. I hope he can accomodate my needs for my harness.

not trying to hi jack thread but does on of them wiring harness say from painless or ez wiring is it COMLETE w/ underdash wiring and everything? thanks john

im not sure honestly....most of them say they do dash illumination and everything like that?

The ron francis harness is the express harness. he said depending how you look at it, its a 16-21 circuit harness. It has room for everything I will need throughout the build, for 419.

Yeah when you buy a harness from painless they come front to rear wiring. Lights, engine, dash, and tailights.

Heard from Ron today and looks like that is the Harness for sure I will be going with. $418 and they can build it to the options I'm going to run. My boss has one of his harnesses in his 56 Chevy and he loves it. If there turnaround time is as good as there cust service so far it will be a great investment. ANd I like that they are serial numbered to help with trouble shooting problems.
