original guages on a new engine

I've decided to go with a F-600 instrument panel in my '68 F-250. My question is: I have an '94 Cummins Diesel in my '68 Ford. . . Does anyone know whether the senders on my engine are in any way compatible with the oil pressure and temperature gauges in the '67 F-600 instrument cluster?

Is there any hope of using the tach?

The factory ammeter was fed juice though a shunt, something your current wiring setup won't have, I would imagine. There's been more than a few discussions about the shunt here on the forums....you can do a search to find those threads.

I'm not sure about the temp sending unit. I'm not sure how they differ in terms of output readings. Wouldn't hurt to try using your existing hookup...the worst that'll happen is faulty reading (or no reading).

As for the tach, as I'm sure you know, it's a mechanical-drive unit. You can either go with an aftermarket tach-drive distributor, or get your existing tach converted to electric. Check out the following thread:

Cummins wouldn't have a Distributor (at least not that kind)

I can't help much with your question but we need to see pictures of that Cummins in there it sounds cool!

Alas, my truck is not in the same city as I am at the moment. I'll take some pics of the engine in a few weeks when we are reunited.

After studying wiring diagrams for both the truck and the cummins engine, I realized that the truck uses 5 v. gauges (supplied by the V.C. unit) and the engine uses 12 v. senders.

Any electronics wizards know of a modification that I can make to the signal that would make the readings make sense?

FYI: Make sure that you include a Pyrometer with your gauges. It's an absolute must to know your exhaust Temperature. AutoMeter makes the finest gauges they're used by virtually all types of automotive racing. They are a bit pricey though I believe they're wrth it...

I would think you could get a 5 volt to 12 volt reducer at any good computer/ electronic supply store. Now if you put a 5/12 volt reducer on it and it works I dont know. I put a 6/12 DC volt reducer on the solar panels on my deer feeders. 12 volt solar panels, 6 volt timer and 6 volt gell cell battery. This way even in a good moon light my reduced 12 volt panels put out 7 volts when I measured them at night. This seems to be a good and reliable way to reduce dc voltage as the first one I converted was 8 years ago and it and the other 3 are still going stong. I got mine at AllTex electronics in Addison Tx. It is a computer supply warehouse for parts.

I think the best way and Quickest would be to use the senders out of the old engine. I do this on all engine swaps, But sometimes you need to get an adaptors or some pipe fittings from the parts store.
