Welcome to the site.

Get a sealed beam headlight and two jumper wires.
hook the light up to the fuse terminal , so basicly the head lamp is the fuse and will prevent your wiring from melting.
If you have a short the lamp will light, then you can track down the short and repair it
My guess is in the steering coloumn or the rear taillight harness where people hack in trailer wiring.

keep us posted .

Sounds like you have a short to ground with one of the turn signal switch wires possibly inside the steering column.
I would unplug all of the wires from the terminal block at the end of the turn signal switch wires as if you were going to replace the turn signal switch. Take your VOM and set to resistance, clip one wire from the vom at one end of a known good fuse that is in the fuse box and place the other wire from the vom at the other end of the fuse. With a good fuse, you should read infinity. Now start plugging in wires one at a time into the correct port of the terminal block. Watch your vom for action. If the fuse blows with the last wire you inserted, you know that that is "bad" wire. Kinda hard to explain good luck.
